My thoughts on the recent spree of School Tragedies.

For those counting, two elementary schools were attacked yesterday. One is China and One in Connecticut. When I first read about them, I honestly had no feelings on it. I sat there and thought, huh, another school shooting. I felt the same about the Batman shooting, and most shooting before it. Eventually all of that turns into anger, not at the shooter. I honestly do not feel a single thing about them, it's the media I hate.

You see, we love the heroes, but we LOVE villains. Columbine, Batman, Connecticut, and Virginia Tech shooters all have something in common. Within an instant they become house-hold names, and we always look for some reason as to why they did it. Think back to Columbine and I want you to name two things for me form a Victim:

Favorite band:
Favorite Video Game:

I can't name any of it, but and it is a very huge but, I KNOW that the shooters loved Rammstein and Doom. I know this because the media spend AGES telling me this. No one thought back to the shooters being victims of bullying, or the environment they grew up in. It was all about how they snapped and the media that they surrounded themselves in, because we want a sensational story.

It sucks this stuff happens, I hate the fact that people decide that the best way to solve their problems is to shoot up a school, but it happens and there is nothing I can do about it. Yet at the same time, we will start 2013 with Good Morning America showing breaking new footage in the Connecticut shooting, because it's news we want to watch. Right now every single insignificant news person is doing their own investigation into this, and constantly questioning family members, teachers, everyone in tow. Because for them, their town is stained, every single time they mention it they will get a look or comment on how terrible the shooting was, and here is the kicker. IT. WILL. NEVER. GO. AWAY.

I cannot possibly know what these people will go through, I just can't without experiencing it for myself. We wake up in our beds, miles away and go about on our day and watch the news to reminds us of how fortunate we are. Yet these people cannot go a single day in their lives without being reminded of that terrible day, they have to suffer through seeing that school every day and dealing with the media and the film-makers who want to capture their suffering, all because we love the macabre.

I want to finish this post with my condolences to the family and friends of the victims, to the parents, friends, and co-workers of the shooter; because for the next three months they cannot step outside to get their mail without being questioned by the medial; and I am truly sorry for that.

I was talking to Kelsey about this yesterday. We're both pretty desensitized.

It's a horrible tragedy, yes. But I think that we're drained. We have so much bullshit that we need to care about more than anything now: Bills, Jobs, Struggling to survive.

So whenever I hear someone is down on their luck, it's deeply saddening that it makes me think of my own and realize that universally, we're all down on our luck.

I moved away from TV due to the media and advertisements. There's a long post about that, but not enough time. Basically, you're right. They blow things out of proportion to pull at your emotional strings.

media sucks - the constant "Breaking News" bullshit just to keep the mentally gullible tuned in. They use the natural human responses to gain/keep viewers to maximize their profits -- truly sick

Even more simply then that, just name a victim. Most people can't even do that, but they can rattle off all the shooters names.

A Really Inconvenient Truth

Pure ignorance and hysteria is the only reason this exploitation is still all over the five O'clock news. If twenty-six murders occur that are all mutually exclusive and completely unrelated, no one cares. No one takes it as a sign of social decline. No one blames video games or firearms. No one even raises their voice or composes headlines about how everything has changed. If it all happens in the same place, even though it is fundamentally the same kind of violence, suddenly there is weight to the event and people find some contrived or illogical reason to care. Make no mistake, I am disgusted, but not for the same reason as most of the people you would meet on the sidewalk. I'll close with a comment that is now already four years old, but will never lose its grip on the cold, jagged, unadulterated truth:
