Odd boot problem

When I turn on my computer, the fans start up, the power and activity lights turn on, then the fan and activity lights abruptly turn off and the power light stays on until I unplug the stupid thing. I've read that it might be a RAM problem, but I haven't even touched the RAM since I've owned it.

Well, after reviewing the play, it seems the most probable cause would be a completely dead motherboard, which means, of course, NEW COMPUTER, HO!

I had something similar happen, and it was due to bad capacitors on my motherboard. If that happens to be your problem as well, you have to be gutsy and slightly crazy to try to fix it. If you're both of those and not afraid of a soldering iron, you can have successful results. Badcaps.net is the website to check out if you're interested.

Your problem could be a bad component of another kind on the motherboard, too, and that would likely be difficult to impossible to fix.

Here's a few suggestions:

1)Make sure that your CPU fan in plugged in and running fast enough....many shutoff immediately if the fan is bad/off.

2)Reseat the RAM - i.e. take em out of their sockets, snap em back in.

3)Reseat add-on cards, esp video.

4)Try diff RAM sticks(s), maybe one went bad - or if you have 2+ try using 1 stick at a time.

5)Then I would check the power supply. Borrow from another comp if handy, or you could buy one fairly cheap. Online you can get some 1/2 way decent ones starting around $40.

Took out one of the sticks of RAM, booted up fine. I guess I found the problem... thanks, Massive.

Now I just need to get more RAM.

UPDATE!

I put the 'bad' RAM in a different slot, and it worked like a charm, and I put the 'good' RAM in the slot that the 'bad' RAM was in and it didn't work, so I guess one of my RAM slots is fuxxored... oh well!

i am actually currently replacing diodes and capasiters on cirket boards for the weapons control box this week (we got 12 of them in at one time) that and or a few 3 position switches, cirketbreakers, relays, and all types of other shit that gets fucked up with them. also a few power control boxes and other random electronic bullshit.

kinda funny to see mention of very similar work being done on computers. the hard part is troubleshooting what is wrong with the darn thing though (the only 2 ways we have is to pin check EVERYTHING with a multimeter, or get a better idea of whats wrong with it by use of a home made piece of test equipment that we refer to as franke (short for frankenstein)
