Resumes?

Dear wise ones,

Anyone have any advice about building a resume? I made one myself and liked it. Here is the link to it in MSWORD format:

2 PGS yes, will probably have to consolidate and maybe shrink the font, any input from anyone is appreciated Smile

Very nice, Wang. My only tip would be to shorten it up a bit. Bullet point then brief description. The recruiter/human rescource person will most likely not read through the whole resume so it is best to get to the major points quickly. Wink

Not to say that what you've done here is not good.

plus i'd like change the fonts a bit
make it look prettier

i dunno about applying for jobs in the US but you might want a cover letter?

I'd say no on the cover letter. Make sure that it's not more than a page, QFE @ what fox said. Don't worry to much about pretty, you need it to stand out, but you don't want to be the guy wearing the neon orange suit to a black tie affair.

Mine I always put the title/position then a brief (very) description of the duties. If I find it on the other computer I'll send it to you as an example.

I'd appreciate that. Link for my resume is down ATM because my synch program decided it didn't like that directory. Gotta fix that... :/

I had my mom look at it and she completely redid it. She actually did shit like that for a living (human resources), but she's fucking insane. Instead of actually asking for the source, she re-typed the whole thing into some crummy template (the original stood out more, so I'll revert to that format), but she was able to cut back on some extra crap.

She told me I didn't need as much academic information like SATs etc etc, yet she decided to put "Sports" as one of my activities. What the fuck? She did say 1+ pages was OK for a "technical resume" .. yeah.

Yeah 1+ pages are ok for tech resumes cause you need to include your certs and programs, etc. I didn't see your resume cause of your problem Sad

But sometimes if youi have a target company its good to change your resume towards them. For example if you were applying to a medical job, you might add back in like a little job you had ages ago at a hospital even though it wasn't technical, they like to know you were in that field. Some places do require cover letters, one thing to remember don't use the same exact one cater it to whomever you apply to. I used to be assistant to a tech recruiter, we throw away alot of resumes based on small things like spelling. If it didn't look like you took the time and effort it was gone Wink

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I'll put mine back up in a bit, I'll probably just convert it straight to HTML or something. I'll post a few versions.

I'm very good with spelling BTW Smile

The one my mother did was similar to the format K9 sent me his in, with an objective and all that.

What do you guys think of this resume? This one I had seen a few weeks ago and I remembered it, so I checked it out. That was pretty much the inspiration for my header design.

I've always made my resume based on what the job required.

If you're applying to say Pixar, they won't care what OS you use, as long as you can model or animate and they can get it from you.

They won't care if you can build a computer or if you can remove some viruses.

But what they do care is if you can give yourself an edge over the other applicants.

If you can model, animate, UV Map, AND skin then you're more than likely to be hired than the guy who just suits exactly what they need. That being the dude who only knows how to model and animate.

Here's a question though. What are you applying to? Or do you just feel like making up a resume for future use?

I would stick with pure basics. That would include references, school related, volunteer work, and past employments.

Hey man, If you want a good resume model I'll show ya. I modeled my resume after my Dad who is the National Marketing Mananger for Unisource Mtg. and has clients all over the U.S. and Canada.
