PASSENGERS clung on for their lives as a luxury cruise ship came close to capsizing off Florida, washing people out of swimming pools and scattering furniture overboard.

The roll sent holidaymakers aboard the 113,000-tonne Crown Princess flying off their sunloungers and smashing against railings.

Stairwells and lift shafts became waterfalls as the ship�s four pools emptied over the 15 decks, which were left strewn with broken glass and blood.

The incident, suspected to have been caused by a faulty steering mechanism, happened 11 miles (18km) off the coast of Florida on Tuesday. The ship�s poolside cinema had been scheduled to screen Titanic hours later.

Princess Cruises in Southampton said that 58 of the 3,080 passengers were British and that 240 had been treated on board, 98 of those having been transferred to hospitals in Florida. All those had since been released, apart from three passengers and two crew members. They are expected to make a full recovery.

A spokeswoman for Princess Cruises had no information on the nationalities of those injured.

One passenger, Carol O�Connell, said: �The ship just started tipping, and it was the most terrifying experience of my life. I felt like we were going overboard.�

Passengers said that the captain, Andrew Proctor, of Aberdeen, addressed sobbing passengers over the loudspeakers after the ship righted itself.

Another passenger, Gary Bauman from New York, said: �I went from one end of the ship right into the wall, like you see on Titanic and a lady came right after me.�

Guests told how they were left facing the sea or the sky as the 951ft vessel lurched to starboard. Elderly guests were thrown from their wheelchairs. A honeymooner, John Joyce, said: �I watched the grand piano come tumbling by. I just assumed my wife was already in the ocean.�

Gymnasium equipment was overturned and slot machines in the casino were uprooted. Guests having treatments in the spa found themselves sliding along corridors on their massage tables.

Tom Daus, 32, of New York, said: �I was just holding on for dear life on to the banister. Water came gushing out of the pool like a mini-tsunami . . . people who were in the pool were shoved out.�

Matt Bergen, of Florida, said: �People were yelling, screaming and crying � even the staff were crying. It was nuts.� Lifejackets were handed out.

Emergency services closed a road for a helicopter landing zone after the 1,157-cabin vessel, which has 1,200 British and Italian crew, limped into Port Canaveral to disembark her injured. Yesterday inspectors from the National Transportation Safety Board boarded the ship, which was built in Italy and has been in service for a month, to investigate.

The Crown Princess had left Port Canaveral on Tuesday and was heading to New York after a nine-day trip round the Caribbean that included stops in the Turks and Caicos, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Two of my favorite movies of all time. The sad thing is, I know no one that likes that kind of humor. My dad and I love those movies though. I tried to show it to my little stepbrother, but he didn't get it. He preferred Princess Diaries.

Never seen Naked Gun, but OMG I love the three stooges. I would watch episodes over and over again with my dad until we laughed at every subtle nuance. The humor isn't in all the punching and bonking, it's in the cleverness of the words and the correlation with the actions. No one can ever, EVER top the stooges.

i'm wondering how a steering malfunction caused it to tip starboard. Perhaps I don't fully understand how the drive assembly pushes the vessel, but I always assumed there was forward and backward, not up and down.
