And when I say what these mainstream cats have done to hip hop this is what I'm talking about. People don't even realize that there is tons of intelligent hip hop out there that doesn't get any credit because mtv is too focused on wack rappers who care about ice, fame, ect. You don't even realize that there are so many more talented people who make next to nothing but still put the work in because they love it, not cause they want to get rich.

And Monkey, you are right. 50 cent is by no means hip hop, but thats what most people think hip hop is, and what its about which is sad.

Ooooh that Kiaus band is some kick ass power metal.

Ah if only the US was half as cool as Europe metalwise. I mean we have bands like Iced Earth, but they were always bigger in Europe than here. Americans are idiots when it comes to music, this I can admit.

All our best metal bands are holdovers from the 80s, most stopped giving us good albums years ago(Metallica and Megadeth Crying or Very sad ). The rest of "metal" is really hardcore(totally screamed undecipherable vocals over cookie cutter copycat guitar parts).

Yall guys have the best, I mean Europe was the metal place in the 70s and early 80s, then the US took over the late 80s, and now it's back to Europe again.

That Spinefarm records is some cool stuff, I might have to buy some albums.

Some of my friends do too. They have nice guitar but the singing doesn't do it for me.

I do like Children of Bodom though, he screams and yet you can understand him, Euros perfected the understandable metal scream.

I disagree. Most genres of music originated (or have their roots) in america. You can't be "idiots" when it comes to music, and be originators of most (if not all) music today. Go find Robert Johnson's greatest hits (Delta blues or something like that) to hear one of the biggest influences on rock music today. (all the people who know what they're doing anyways Wink )

would any rock and roll exist if it werent for slavery think about it

im not trying to racist just a realist

slaverys > gave people soemthign to dislike > often the dislike was put into song > this song eventually evolved into blues and for the more musically oriented jazz > Blues slowly turned into the 12 bar style that is popular today > 12 bar blues= early rock and roll > from that sprung everything that is large today

true or no?

^somewhat.
I would say that they heavily influenced and contributed the creation of rock and roll. However They are not the sole influence, and to give them all the credit for creating it would be inproper.

I don't think Americans have poor taste in music. I think a lot of them narrow down everything though. Like if they heard rock growing up, then chances are they'd love rock and, for the most of the time, just listen to that. If they'd expand they could see how awesome other styles could be.

I like rock, but I can listen to others as well, and I do just that. My friends love country, so I listen to that. The rap is great for dancing, hands down. But so is techno if you don't like the constant swearing.

But my least favorite music would have to be pop. Some pop is... tolerable and is good for like a "one time listen" deal. But too much hurts my head :/

I stick with my opinion sorry to say, at least on the metal circuit, Europe keeps coming out with new styles and better bands.

Metal originated in Europe, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and the like invented it. Maiden and Priest perfected it. Thrash metal did start in the US, which is about it metalwise, maybe the Groove metal too. Power, Death, Black, and Folk metal started in Europe, as did Doom.

I don't mean our idea of music sucked back when blues, jazz, and rock came to be, but in the day of mtv and supersaturated radio, with the record labels making the big bucks, I think as a whole the US has a bad taste. Most take it in spoonfed.

Shit must people tend to think of Disturbed and Korn as the pinnacles of metal, most couldn't even recognize Iron Maiden and they are as famous as it comes.

It is like that with every genre, not just metal. The crappy radio friendly types are what most Americans know.

Axe, if you cant find 'kiaus' anywhere its because hirm made typo, its actually kiuas (yes its big difference). There lives 15 million people in Norway, Sweden and Finland but they still make the best metal.

You ever give a listen to Kyuss or Fu Manchu? Kyuss is gone now, but some of those guys formed Queens of the Stone Age.

The record companies dictate what is played on the radio, that's why you hear shit in heavy rotation for 3 months....every 15 minutes or so Rolling Eyes

Underground, non big label music is where you find something to please Wink

QFE on the Robert Johnson, Milklove that

On the metal circuit, I can see but just barely. I know there's a lot of people that like metal at my school. I know it b/c they ask me to listen to it and I don't like metal much at all.

But to be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of a metal radio station. Do they have them? 0.0 If they did then people would explore it to hear it more..

I think the heaviest I've ever listened to and liked, was AC/DC. And that's more on the lines of rock. Laughing

In here Finland we have only these "metal friday nights", which lasts for 2 hours. I find it kinda stupid because I know people listens it, and quite frankly most talented finnish artists are playing metal. And the time, who listens radio at friday 9pm to 11pm?

I think there are US radio stations that plays hard-rock - heavy-metal, but I don't know. It's really a shame that there aren't so many of them, heavy-metal is large genre theres pretty much something for everyone.

I think things are changing. Old/religious people seems to really dislike metal scene. Most of them claims it to be "satanic" music, while they have never actually listened it through. And then there are people who creates their opinion based on stereotypics.
But you can see that heavy-metal is growing, can I even say it's becoming a trend? I only see people listening mostly rap or metal, others are minor. But I can't really speak for other countries or all of the people, just the people around me.
