Reverend may bring message of hate to soldier's funeral

James Stewart spent most of his boyhood in St. Petersburg, and died in Iraq.
Fred Phelps is the pastor of Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, but he spends most of his time preaching hate toward homosexuals.

"He has a reputation, somewhat notorious, among the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community," said Brian Winfield, a spokesperson for Equality Florida.

Winfield says Phelps has been showing up at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Phelps' web site says protestors will be at the funeral of Army Sgt. James Stewart, who died last week in Iraq. Stewart's mother lives in St. Petersburg.

"We think it's absolutely repugnant of Rev. Phelps to bring his message of hatred and bigotry not only to St. Petersburg, but to the doorstep of a family who really should be left alone," Winfield said.

Equality Florida is contacting Park Street Baptist Church to see if the church would like them to act as human shields at Stewart's funeral on Monday.

"We're willing to stand in between the hateful message of Rev. Phelps and protect the privacy of the funeral and of the family as they mourn," Winfield said.

A soldier from Ft. Drum, where Stewart was stationed, will accompany his mother during the funeral.

Protesters showed up at a funeral Wednesday for a local man slain in Iraq, but the fallen Marine's supporters far outnumbered them.

Services for Philip Martini were still under way at 11 a.m., with the protesters gathered outside the service in an apparent effort to disrupt the proceedings, NBC5's Lisa Tutman reported.

Martini, 24, was killed by sniper fire in Iraq on April 8.

The handful of protesters was dwarfed by hundreds of supporters who showed up to voice their appreciation for Martini's sacrifice.

Martini's friends said he knew he wanted to be a Marine, and he loved his job.

"Phil was a very caring person, and he was just loved by everybody, and I think that sometimes we're very selfish," said Lindsy Wojak, a family friend. "He went over there to help people, and he wound up losing his life, and I think that we need to honor him."

Martini had an opportunity to come home after his first tour of duty in Iraq, but he decided to stay on. He signed up for a second tour, during which he was killed.

Some of those who showed up to defend the family said they were against the war, but supported those who were fighting it.

"I have two sons who are currently serving or have served in Iraq," said Sue Vollink, a family supporter. "I don't support the war, but I support my boys and all the soldiers that have given their lives."

At the service Wednesday, members of the Patriot Guard Riders stood in honor of the fallen soldier and in support of his family.

Steve Plyman, a Vietnam veteran and Patriot Guard member, said he needed to be there.

"There's a lot of disdain right now for the war that's going on over there, but it's not about the war, it's about the people," Plyman said. "We were treated pretty badly when I came back, and I'm just going to make sure it's not done to these kids."

Across the street from the service, seven or eight Kansas-based protesters held signs that said "God Hates America" and "Thank God For Dead Soldiers." They believe that soldiers are dying in Iraq as punishment from God.

"This nation has lost a soldier, and his family has lost a son," Tutman said to one of the protesters. "Do you see any disrespect at all in what you're doing out here today?"

"I think it was very disrespectful for them to raise that child for the devil and send him straight to hell at the hand of an angry god," protester Shirley Phelps-Roper said.

But a Catholic bishop who attended the funeral disagreed.

"This is a day of prayer; this is a very sacred day," Bishop James Wilkowski said. "This is a day in which a family needs to grieve and begin the healing process. They do not need that healing process tainted and scandalized by Fred Phelps and the Phelpian group. This is a time in which we're supposed to be remembering a national hero."

A police presence was also at the funeral, but at 11 a.m., there had been no disruption as a result of the protesters.

when the first thread about westboro baaptist church came up, i gave them a call, and have this yelling conversation with the lady on the phone. and im pretty sure that she called me a sodomizing faggot, because i didnt think that what they were doing was right. bah i cant stand these people, but i wont say that i hate them, cause that only bring me down to their level. this is the worst case of intolerance ive ever seen. thank god for PGR, we need more people like that in the world.

I'm along with what phillip wrote for not hating them, but i gotta say, if I had only enough food for myself and another living being, and both a stray old dog, and one of these assholes came crawling at my door for food, I'd make the dog the best godamn steak he ever had.

I did funeral detail while in the service - and I would have punched them in the face even if it wasn't my relative! Do the service professionally of course, then try to get my mates to hop out our black tinted-window van like the A-Team and pwn their hillbilly asses while "Taps" blared in the background! I dont hate them either - but some shit is just wrong. Those Phelps' folks are lucky to be walking imo.

I hope they do because some people deserve to have their heads chopped off. I HATE these guys and no I am not going down to their lvl, because even though I do hate them I would never piss on their funeral. Even if I was the one to put them there. Some things just go to far.

sure we as military personel do take an oath to protect the constition but...
iraq is not a threat to this document we hold so dear the true threat comes from our own gov't and things like the patriot act and homeland security
