i can't run HL.exe (half life or any any half life mods.). when i try, i get the error:

"Half-Life Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

it's the standard windows xp crash message.

i'm not asking for a fix, this is so generic there's no one fix for it. i've been googling and trying stuff for 2 hours, to no avail. reinstalling sounds/graphics drivers did nothing, reinstalling the game and steam did nothing, i dunno.

anyone have any other suggestions for some weird stuff i can try? maybe could someone with a working hl1 send me their hl1 directory? (excluding mods it's only 10megs, so if you copied everything out of the hl folder but the mod folders you could zip it and send over AIM).

thanks.

You can reinstall everything. Severe? Yes, but easier than Googling for hours. Very Happy Steam remembers your account just fine. I rebuilt my PC and had no issues with Steam.

The best advice I can give you is deleteing your hl folder and re downloading it.
Also, have you re-booted lately?
Do you have programs running in the background that could cause it to crash?

Supa, that won't work. It hasn't worked for a while apparently.

He's reinstalled it about sixty bajillion times. The only advice I have for him is reformat and reinstall windows .. of course, using my windows disk Very Happy

i already tried reinstalling steam, i removed everything hl related from my comp and reinstalled.

system restore is something i hadn't thought of, i'll give it a whirl. i was having some weird problems with hl2.exe but i fixed those by reinstalling my video drivers.

that's because HL is the devil! Evil or Very Mad

my theory is, if somethin doesn't work, turn off your computer and ignore it, it'll fix itself eventually... of course, that's why my computer screws up constantly... Rolling Eyes

i reformat every 3-4 months usually. this time i did something smart- anything i needed to download (games, apps, drivers, etc), i put onto a secondary hard drive (only 3gb, holding music and downloads) so next time i reformat, it will be a lot less painful.

why the heck would you need to reformat, anyway? Confused is it just maintenance or somethin?

^ obviously, has never reformatted... heck, barely ever does that "system defragmenting" that you're supposed to do every week
