Top Reply with quote

I'm planning over the next couple of months to upgrade my PC because getting a new one to play games on is out of the question right now.

I've already got 1.25gb of RAM so that is alright. My processor is a 1.7 running XP.

I'm looking at an external hard drive (currently only have about 5 gb left on mine because it was only a 30gb to begin with). I found this one and wondered what you smart fuck's opinion on it is
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6843552&type=product&cmp=++&id=1093467674351

I'm also going to likely upgrade my video card. Do you recomend a ATI over the NVIDEA? I've got the GEForce 5200 w/ 128mb right now. I'd like to bump up to a 256mb.

Thoughts. Opinions. Flaming posts.

im an amd/ati guy, but its pretty much personal preference... as for the chip/mobo u posted, an amd @ that speed would be a LOT cheaper....

its the same mobo i have, its quite nice... there are other options, but i went for what i know & both of those together are about what youd pay for that pentium

I'll be honest here - If you're going to change the CPU and the Mobo ... get a new machine. You're currently running a Dell, right?

External hard drives are good for simplicity and storage. Don't even think of putting an OS on one. What's your current drive capacity? EDIT: 30GB .. wow i'm stupid. Ever think of clearing shit out? Razz

I'd reccomend a faster, bigger internal drive perhaps. Y'know, a decent 80GB 7200RPM IDE drive. No need for 300GB of storage.

Also, try these sites instead of that shizzit:

www.newegg.com
www.tigerdirect.com
www.directron.com
www.pricewatch.com

CHanging the moboard and proc are way down the road if ever. I'd be content w/ upgrading the vid card. I've tried cleaning up the 30gb but can't get it any better than it is now (ever since I put the XP on there over the ME).

I am with Wang on the external not being so good unless intended for storage.

As for video cards check this link out:
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html

I am sure you will see how the cards in your price range compare for the games you want to play. These benchmarks graphs are AWESOME.

I was looking at the external to have more space for games. Buddy of mine said hooking one up via firewire would be fine for running games. I'm guessing you guys feel different about it.

I THINK ITS TIME FOR HIM TO DIE!

I don't think it would, really. MMMKz0r ... so did we determine previously that you have an AGP8X slot? How much are you looking to spend?

Well there ya go. they have an ad in the paper on wednesday and friday and the mobo/cpu deals are always different. I'd get one of those combos, but beware the ones with the cheap-ass mobo. You can probably get a mobo/cpu , vid card and another drive for say 4 bills on the low end.
