Before I fully sit down to review this book, I need to give a little bit of backstory. Grant Morrison has been one of the Batman writers for D.C. for a couple of years now. It was under his watchful eye that we saw the Dick Grayson Batman, the death of Batman, and the creation of the beloved Damian Wayne, the latest of the Robin line.

The important thing about Damian Wayne is that he is the son of Bruce and Talia al-Ghul, and that he is like his father. The most important thing about Damian Wayne is that he is dead. In Batman Inc#8, we saw Grant Morrison kill off his brain child and the son of Bruce Wayne. The resulting New 52 comics all featured a response to the death of this beloved character. (For those keeping track, that is 2/5 Robins dead, and 1/5 Robins currently dead)

Batman and Robin #18 is in my mind an amazing piece of work. It follows Batman in the days following the death of his son, and no one says a word. Literarily, the only words shown are written in a note and the title and credits. Batman and Robin #18 is carried on art alone, and the entire story and Bruce's thoughts are displayed in these powerful scenes that do not show The Dark Knight, but a father grieving for his son.

While Batman #18 showed a man on a warpath, caring not for himself, a true superman; Batman and Robin elected to show a more human side to the Dark Knight a Batman who isn't stoic or filled with rage but a broken man that knows what it is like to live in a big empty house filled with nothing but memories.

R.I.P. Damian Wayne
