This is all much better than the system that the Romans originally used:

They had a 355-day year and inserted an extra month every few years.

While we're on the subject of calendar silliness, here's a fun one.

First, here is some Latin that we hopefully all know. This is not a grammatically precise table. But it is good enough for us:

LATIN PREFIXES wrote:

quad- = four
quint- = five
sex- = six
septem- = seven
octo- = eight
novem- = nine
decem- = ten

Now look at the last four months of the year:
September
October
November
December

Aha! So September must be the 7th month, October must be the 8th month, and so on! Wait, that's not right...

In fact, July and August used to be called Quintilis and Sextilis before some arrogant emporers named those months after themselves.

It turns out they added two months later but kept the names the same.

I think we should just chop all the months down to a nice round 30, then have 5 festival days at the end of each year...except every fourth year, when we could have 6 festival days.

Or maybe cut them down to 28 days and have 13 months, plus one (or two, for leap years) non-month day at the end. But then we'd miss out on a holiday week. But then the months would be an even four weeks and we could count the extra days as not actual days of the week.

I believe the Mayans did something like that. Only they thought of the extra days as unlucky days rather than festival days.

If I remember correctly, this is very similar to the Chinese calendar, which is still used today.
