I was thinking about this earlier today. I just shake my head at all the naive fools who are pissed off at Netflix prices rising at a such a fast rate. When you consider that Netflix, quite literally, was using up half of the entire world's bandwith, it was only a matter of time before something had to change. It's sort of like how the American economy was so awesome in the 1950s because we literally produced the majority of the world's goods. These people should just be glad that they had it so good even for a brief period of time. It was a temporary arrangement all along.

I disagree, Ben.

Netflix only consumes 20% of the downtime(6-10PM) bandwidth, not 50%. It's much less during the day. (Source)

I'm extremely pissed at Netflix. It's not the fact that they raised the prices, it was how they did it and treated their customers as such.

Netflix was popular because it offered half ass streaming with half ass dvd selection and combined it to make it a deal. Hulu offers a far better selection streaming-wise and Blockbuster's DVD by mail has far superior DVD selections since all of their stores went bankrupt.

Now see, my other problem was that they split the services. I watched almost everything on the streaming to the point there was very little else I wanted to watch. But I also had the DVDs.

Every time I got a DVD, it would take me a week to get it. I would have to watch it the very next day and put it in the mail that same night because it would take another week to get it sometimes more. They call it "throttling" which means if you're getting more DVDs a month, they'd rather ship a movie from a location in say Cali to me in TN, just so I have to wait.

That comes out to be 4 DVDs a month for $9 if this was separate. Sure this might be 2.25 a movie, but if I have to wait a week, I'll just go to redbox.

If they had kept their bundle and raised the price in the streaming by 50%, I would find this acceptable. Instead, I got a 100% increase and added to the DVD which splits my bundle, Netflix telling me at first to suck it up, and then have them recant and split into two companies, yet I still have to pay for their shitty streaming and DVDs separately?

Fuck you, Netflix.

All I have to say is that I wished video stores would come back. There was some sort of joy in the experience for me. I liked the culture of the stores and being surrounded by it when I shopped for something. I liked that something random and unexpected could be found through some sort of happy accident by looking things over rather than hunting a specific title. I discovered Lord of War at Blockbuster that way when it was a new release and it's one of my ten favorite films now. I know that the business model of the old video store setup just isn't practical anymore, but I still like to reminisce.

Yeah, this is true. I remember going to Blockbuster as a kid and seeing all those games.

Around when the Playstation came out, they had games for 4 different systems. Nintendo, Genesis, Super Nintendo and Playstation. Some of the fancier stores had Sega CDi.

Going to Blockbuster was exciting as you never knew what to expect!

Good points both - but Netflix fucked up bad. It's like us running a public company - we held a vote and decided to change shit 1/2 way thru - lol people would obviously be pissed and go somewhere else.

3. Netflix fucked up but guess what everyone? It's a free country and if Netflix shot itself in the foot instead of bitching we either need to make a new and better Netflix or find one out there. If Netflix fails to make a correction and burns itself to the ground, in its ashes something better will come along and be the successor and you'll have forgotten that Netflix existed. Even if Netflix doesn't burn itself down they've pissed off enough people that they've opened the door for something better to hop up and steal away loyal customers who feel betrayed.

4. Ben, I could be quite wrong on this (no sources - if you agree/disagree with the following statement post it), but I think you're in a hardcore minority. I suppose some people might have nostalgic feelings but the convenience Netflix brought us was incredible. Seriously. Fuck Blockbuster.

Not sure if you guys are still following the blogs. But Netflix killed Qwikster. The name is actually really hard to remember if you aren't used to it.

I was trying to look it up, but kept mis-spelling it.

Anyways, you can see their stock in the article and on the 24th, they're reporting it's earnings for it's investors.
