Ok, so this is pretty "special case" but I thought I would share because I came across this the other day while trading for engie hats.

When an engineer is wearing the hot rod (the welding hat) it always drops down in front of his face when he was blueprints out (about to build) or when carrying a building.

The catch is, if I spy disguises himself as an engineer wearing the hot rod, it will drop down in front of his face when he equips the electro sapper.

So basically, it is a for sure give that an engie is actually a spy if he walks up to an existing structure with the hot rod over his face. Hopefully however, you were able to take notice that he was a spy before he gets close enough.

On that note, do you guys know what happens if a spy chooses to disguise himself as a class that no member of the opposing team has chosen? Say there are no snipers on blu and a red spy disguises as sniper, what name does he get?

Hope this tidbit kills off a few spies before they can sap a whole forward base or something. It has already been useful for me once, so I can see it catching on, especially if I wear nothing but my hot rod from here on out.

If a spy disguises as a class no one is playing as, it picks a random name AFAIK. So, for example, if you see Nugget as something other than a sniper, shoot him!

I've seen spies with my name as something other than a Demo before, so yeah it just kinda picks one.

Also, you can tell by the eyes:

I'll return volley with a tidbit that I know that'll be a big deal to us when we get around to a push server. Three people is the most that can boost a cart's speed. While you can have as many people on the cart as you like, only the first three will make any difference. Anyone else is simply a plan B for when someone dies.

Another fact that I've discovered while playing alot of push and control point lately: Demomen equipped with the Pain Train and Chargin' Targe are better cart pushers than most Scouts due to their stats while equipping them. With that setup, they have

2X pushing speed and control point capture rate.
175 health.
40% explosive damage resistance
50% fire damage resistance

all at the cost of 10% bullet vulnerability. I often equip the Loch 'N Load with this combo to deal with the only real threats, Heavies and Sentry Guns. It neutralizes them nicely. If you go with my first piece of info and get a Medic to overheal you and be the third man on the cart, you'll be an impressive force.

Why I don't see this more is beyond me.

Wait, does that mean that:

Heavy, Heavy, Scout, Heavy

is more effective than:

Heavy, Heavy, Heavy, Scout

Its the first three people, so a combination of pain train+scouts could get the cart up to 6.

But my question was: does the order matter? Say you have 3+ engis pushing a cart like in a video, and a scout shows up. Does it speed up?

No, you already have 3 people pushing it. It's sort of like how having two scouts is technically a waste of manpower on the cart seeing as how you're using what is essentially a 4x push rate when you'll only be given a bonus equal to 3 people because of the cap on the speed bonus. Since the scout is so frail, it would be smarter to pick a more durable class to get the same 3-man bonus, but have them be more resilient and able to fight back to greater effect. My whole point is that with a Demoman properly equipped, you can also make that 2x capping player be more durable as well. I love the Pain Train/Grenade Launcher demo teamed up with a normal soldier pushing the cart through the tunnel in Badwater. That's alot of firepower for only two guys pushing the cart at top speed.

I think the best action to take against spies is to just kill all your teammates

So I have recently discovered a way to tell if someone is a spy 100% of the time.

The F key by default is assigned to inspect, which when used in game cycles through all special items on a player, as long as they are on your team. So if you were to notice a player with the the skyrim hat but upon inspecting them with f nothing comes up. Then you know that they are a spy.
