I'm not sure if anyone still checks here, but let's give it a shot.

When I pressed the power button today, I heard two very loud pops coming from the computer. This was followed by a burning smell. I immediately unplugged everything and opened the case, but I could not locate where the smell was coming from before it went away.

I don't see any obvious damage inside, but I am hardly an expert. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Possibly your power supply? Does the computer still sound like it starts up or give any indication that it has any power (blinking LED's inside/outside the case)

Popped capacitors.

Check your power supply and motherboard for capacitors leaking chalky goo (at least I remember it as chalky looking...). If you find the two culprits you'll know what needs to be replaced.

When that happened to me, my power supply was the cause.

Yep, it was the power supply. Now I can either ship it back to Seattle to get it fixed under warranty, or get a new PSU here. hmm.

depends what you would miss the most:
~ $50 or the time it takes to send and wait for it
