District 9

I saw it as a matinee this afternoon. It was definitely a good movie to see and by far the most original piece of science fiction or drama that I've seen in a long time. The best part of it was how the situation of the alien species in this movie parallels how human beings treat one another. It's thought provoking story about greed, oppression and cruelty without those themes being overbearing. I've always liked movies with depth to them and this one is great for that. I'll skip any better synopsis since this film does have a few twists. I'd give this between 3 or 4 stars depending upon what kind of moviegoer you are.

I'm excited to see this. You know this was Peter Jackson's Halo project, before they deceided that was a lame idea?

Good info, thanks. Weird that the movie 9 is also coming out 9/9/09 and deals with the end of human life. Lots of similar themes.

related to that:
I was wishing that the era of copy cat movies is over, but alas it seems to be and ongoing thing. Did you ever notice that when a movie that seemed it was going to be a big hit was being early promoted, that soon after a copy cat movie followed, and they almost released simultaneously? i.e.:

A Bug's Life vs Ants (terrible)
Armageddon vs Deep Impact (both bad)
Mall Cop vs Observe & Report (retarded)
Mission to Mars vs Red Planet (meh)

Any others? These all bothered me....

District 9 was interesting. I was expecting more.

I think the human bravey thing in the face of an OBVIOUSLY physically superior species (even when holding guns) made it unbelievable to me. Sure your backup could kill the bug, but it could rend you well before the counter fire.

Also not sure why the bugs went after the merc bad guy at the end. To save an obvious human with a weird arm??? Why wouldnt they have picked up guns off all the dead africans and mercs???

This is why I dont watch tv. too picky about nonsensical stuff. The more a movie is decent in the big flic the more I need the details there too. Easier just to toss out a whole bucket of crap then sift through one for shiny bits.

Massive, I have TOTALLY seen the copycat thing. but i cant think of any examples at the moment. Indeed it is like they do it to lessen the impact of the "other guys" hit or something. i dont get it...

The last fight scenes were just hollywood must haves. Stupid and idiotic brave scenes that made no sense and is way out of the movies theme. "UHHH I won't leave you alone my bruther!! Crying or Very sad

I left to wonder why wasn't the technology gone any further. I mean the aliens were there 20 years! Sure they coudn't use the weapons, but in 20 years there had to be some breakthroughs. It felt like the aliens just landed there and all the experiementing was just started. And that's another point. Why wasn't there MORE military at present? Surely the U.S would have landed some military base on top of the city or something, and not let the 'peacekeeping' forces take the role. They even had acces to mothership and through out the movie I thought why would it been left alone? The city around if would have grown huge and wealthy, think about all the tourists, corporations and countries that would have wanted to have some piece of the aliens.

The movie was great for the first half. It had this tension between the humans and aliens. I was expecting some sort of massive riot and uprising from the aliens. It never happened, which was truly disappointing, because from the trailers it looked like some end of the days movie. It had all of these "don't do our mistakes" like indicating some sort of mass genocide of human race or something.

I had some trouble with this movie. I sat roughly the middle of the room and I started to feel motion sickness. So I moved to the very back and although it felt less, it takes a while to get back to normal. By the end of the movie I was still a little woosy walking out.

Despite that, I loved the movie itself (to the point I'd rather sit and watch it and risk getting more sick than to leave). It was very well done and enjoyed everything that transpired.

it did feel like that. Felt too concerned with integration with other products than it did a story. Like to modular. :/

I read today in TIME that seven of the ten biggest movies in the past year were sequels or prequels. District 9 was listed as among the top ten that were original and it's now being considered for sequels. I think part of what made movies like Fight Club and Office Space such big cult movies in the previous decade was that noone tried to alter them or improve upon them with sequels. They were left to just be what they were and that made them special. I guess this is just a long way to say that Hollywood is up to its old tricks and we should all be worried.

Well I kinda of considered District 9 to be like the Kill Bill series. Like one movie, but in a two part series. And after watching District 9 I figured it was setting up for another movie.

I think in this case, I would be more disappointed in not seeing a sequel than for it to have one. Pretty rare exception.
