I like to be a handy fellow. I always have a paperclip, sometimes a bobby pin, and two advil in my wallet. In my gym/sports bag I have a little pack I fashioned together: It has an old leatherman, a small bottle with a few advil, antibacterial ointment, some band-aids, a sealed glow-stick, a spork, a knife, sanitary wipes - and despite people making fun of me for having this little kit in the bag, it's come in handy - namely advil, antibacterial ointment, and the band-aids.

I threw the leatherman in there because it's convenient to have in a pack, but not something I like to carry with me. But as I've gotten older, I've realized just how goddamn useful it is to have a knife. Especially when I have to stab someone and there's nothing better than a pen.

So any knife experts out there? Where should I look? What should I get?

I have 3 leatherman strategically located anywhere I might be - or already in bags I use when out and about. They are not as useful (convenient) as a dedicated knife though as you mentioned...

I HIGHLY recommend an spring loaded "open assist" (with the thumb peg through the blade) lockblade knife.

Like this, but find one that feels right (sold everywhere):

Watch out for the tiny little Texas Toothpick variety of blades. Those fuckers are sharp! The tip of my pinkie still fears for it's life whenever I handle ours.

All the knives I ever buy are Benchmade. They are very durable and I love how lightweight a lot of them are. A lot of cool designs too. Most of them are smaller so it is not a huge honker of a knife. If your looking for a good pocket knife, go benchmade.

I only like buy custom made one of a kind knives from various stores. The current knife I have is a MCUSTA made in Japan. It's got a custom etched designed stainless steel handle and the blade is made out of folded steel.

So, if I ever kill someone, it'll be too easy to identify the murder weapon.

That's typically what just the blade looks like, but obviously the handle is custom made.

Yeah, folded steel can create really pretty designs on the blade. My dad just bought one a month or so ago and I love how it looks.

Wow, that's always been exactly my combat-fantasy plan for dealing with airplane hijackers.
