I have a memory problem.

I just bought two sticks of Kingston 1Gb DDR2 80Mhz PC6400 CL5 ram to go with my previous Buffalo sticks of the same type. Installation went well, PC booted up, but 64-bit Vista seems to have some problems recognizing all the ram. Task Manager and DxDiag say that I have only 3G, whereas System tells the correct 4Gb amount. Should I simply try reinstalling the sticks again?

Try booting with each stick individually. That's usually the recommended technique for isolating RAM issues.

All of the individual sticks boot up fine.

You have 4GB. My system says the same thing. Task Manager and Dxdiag do not recognize my 4GB either. But when I take one GB out, I do notice a slight difference in speed. I'm on an XP though.

I, personally, think it's just a display error. Kinda like when everything would only go up to 1999. Well they didn't predict things would get up to 4GB and beyond.

Did you benchmark the speed? Are you on a 32bit OS?

Not quite - I don't think they predicted the world would end at year 2000 either Wink

I would assume they figured something else would outdate the technology or something by then. But something compelled them to make it up to '99.

Everything else recognizes that I have 4 GB. Just the Task Manager and Dxdiag does not.

Don't know which version I have. None of my programs I have tell me so if you know of a way, I'll relay that to you.

I wonder what Task Manager will say if my memory usage goes over three gigs.

But XP doesn't support 4gbs of RAM, only 3.

Physical Memory Limits: Windows XP

The following table specifies the limits on physical memory for Windows XP.

Windows XP (reg)
32-bit OS = 4 GB
64-bit OS = 128 GB

Windows XP Starter Edition
32-bit OS = 512 MB
64-bit OS = N/A

There's a whole discussion there if you wanna take a look at it. I know that 4GB is the true max, although it's misleading. They had a deal at the store I got it from (Microcenter), Buy one GB, get one free.
