Discuss: Michael Phelps Smokin' Pot

So here's something to snack on: Super olympian Michael Phelps was caught hitting up a bong at a party. Most seem to be OK with letting him slide, but there are law enforcement officials and writers and concerned parents who want this guy to be taken down because it is indeed illegal (regardless of how you think it should be) AND they feel like a role model shouldn't be doing these kinds of things.

Personally, I think this is significant because, as Sprite said, if you can smoke weed and win eight gold medals and be the best swimmer in the world, then weed can't be all that bad. It is indeed illegal, and if they arrest him, I hope people see it more as a martyrdom than as "WELL WE TAUGHT THAT BOY A LESSON! Don't smoke weed kids! You could be Michael Phelps only to have it disappear in a puff of smoke! ha ha ha ha ha!"

I know we have a few pro-pot folks here (I don't smoke and probably never will for the record) but I'm interested in hearing from people that can really put forth a good argument as to how Michael Phelps smoking pot is a bad thing.

I really don't think seeing Phelps smoking a bong is a big deal; it's certainly not enough to label him a pot advocate or anything of that sort. Lots of people have smoked in their times, but are not by any means habitual smokers. One old snapshot of Phelps taking a bongload shouldn't lead to people wondering how his marijuana life effected his swimming life Razz

Though it is funny as fuck. Way to go, high ass!

The city and campus police already said they aren't going to charge him. It's the county sheriff (elected official) that said they would charge him. That's the sheriff trying to earn some votes is all.

naw, I don't really think its a big deal. As for it affecting him somehow, I remember seeing his eating schedule and diets for the olympics, and that shit was pretty strict, so I doubt he lit up then.

Not a big deal to me. I'd rather see him smoking weed than using steroids. Just because he's won 8 gold medals doesn't mean he's a Mr. GoodyGood. I don't even see anyone smoking weed as a big deal really. I find alcoholism way more serious.

I don't touch the stuff but honestly if anyone's earned the right to relax with some weed for an evening it's him. Though it's a bit stupid to do illegal stuff where you know people could easily find out if you're famous.

Ok, I do smoke, probably not as much as shoes, but a decent amount. I even stopped from January 1st until February 1st. Stopping had no effect on me. Weed is what you make it, instead of drinking lots of alcohol, I smoke a little marijuana. I have been around both drinking and smoking and every single time, drunk people do more stupid shit (fight, drama, puke, sex with nasty women) than those who are high. I can also say that it is not addictive. Most people have more problems stopping cigarettes. I have stopped for as much as 8 months cold turkey, and had no issues just not doing it.

I do believe it should be legalized, yes it is against the law, but the government also made it schedule 1. This implies that it has no medicinal use whatsoever (which science has proven false). Opiates, meth, and drugs used for assisted suicides are schedule 2 but marijuana is worse than these according to Washington. You cannot OD on weed, impossible.

So I think it should be legal. Phelps breaking the law is wrong I suppose, but how many of you speed when driving? This is much more dangerous to lives than a hit of weed. Endangering others on the highway draws a tiny slap on the wrist.

Make it legal at age 18 or 21 and tax it like tobacco. The government saves money by not fighting marijuana anymore, they actaully gain money from taxes, and it keeps us normal smokers from having to deal with shady dealers.

Theoretically, smoking marijuana AND tobacco, drinking alcohol should be illegal.

Marijuana causes some serious issues if smoked for a long period of time as it's a Neurotoxin which means it kills brain cells. This is very similar to alcohol which also kills brain cells.

Marijuana has been shown to have more toxic materials embedded into the herbs than tobacco. However, if you truly wish it to be legalized, you can make a point that if you use a vaporizer instead of burning the leaf, you can get the same effects as smoking and not have the health concerns such as heart attack, stroke and the abnormalities of the brain.

My family is pretty messed up when it comes to my dad side of the family. All of them partake in everything I've listed above and even some heavier drugs. Seeing them kills me inside that people would throw their life away just to appease themselves.
