I bought both The Gunslinger and The Drawing Of The Three on Monday, on a whim. I read the first yesterday, and just now finished the second. I am now planning on going to the bookstore tomorrow to buy the rest of the series. Holy shit.

I'm reading H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness right now. its my first dive into H.P. Lovecraft, but other than the slightly boring technical detailing, I'm liking it a lot right now. I'm in a Guillermo Del Toro fix right now, so it'll probably be his suggestion of Frankenstein next.

At 19, Frankenstein was "the best book". (youth vs adult)

At 29, Gilgamesh was "the best book" (trying too hard)

At 38, Lord Jim was "the best book". (over-sacrifice)

Books hit me totally different at different times in my life...

I bought Lord Jim when I was 15, and it was too difficult to read then. So now it sits on my shelf waiting until I can better understand joseph Conrad

I just finished reading Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. It's about the lost SEAL team in Afghanistan in 2005. I figure that he deserves my money after all he and his friends suffered.

Brave New World was excellent. My copy had some lil short essay in the back too called "Brave New World Revisited" that was pretty good; basically Huxley examined what things had changed about the world since he wrote the book and how different things got closer to or further from what he had written about.

I recently read Brave New World and I have to say that it was chilling and terrifying, especially towards the end. I think society will go towards Huxley's view rather than the dystopia outlined in Orwell's 1984. Haven't read Fahrenheit 451 yet, but it's on my list.

I just finished Les Misérables. Great book, for excessive values of "great." Had been reading it since the spring. Glad I read it on Kindle with a built-in dictionary...

In the time since I posted that list a page or two back I've also covered everything in it except for For Whom the Bell Tolls, the comic book list, and The Three Musketeers. And a few more. Re-read The Count of Monte Cristo this year (still my favorite ever) and read The Phantom of the Opera before Les Mis, so this year's been full of 1800s French authors...

About 1/3 a way into a tale of 2 cities. Also glad for the built in kindle dictionary, although I wish there was a way to define old English expressions.

I'd be interested in hearing about any free amazon books, as I travel a lot now and do airport reading.

reading History of Piracy, officially the 3rd book I'll hopefully finish in my lifetime. Its actually really good, explains which pirates owned and which failed miserably. Also explains how piracy started and how it grew, leading to how it ended.

Most old titles are free though... I've got a bunch loaded on mine and haven't paid for one yet.
