new rig

due to my beloved, almost 4 year old PC getting KIA'ed in an upgrade gone horribly wrong, i have finally been forced to order parts to build a new one. however, some of the old beast will live on for years to come in the new build....RIP beast, my your parts raped carcass rest peacefully in an unknown landfill somewhere miles away for all eternity.

that aside however, i am a bit out of date this time around as far as hardware goes so i would like peoples opinion as to the potential performance, and longevity of this new build. i have already ordered parts, but did not do the month of research that i did for my old PC.

first off, a new case with 7 x 120mm fans V my old cases 7 x 80mm. this new one also has an additional 80mm fan for a total of 8 stock case fans, possibly to be upgraded with after market ones later. NZXT Zero Black/Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case

next comes the power. to power the newer parts, bigger fans, and massive graphics cards they have now and days, i have decided to go from my old 500W PSU (still 100% good though, and for sale if any one wants it) for a 750 W one. also made by PC power and cooling (got it on sale to, $80 off Razz

)

as for the motherboard, i am staying with ASUS, however, even as much as i love AMD, intel is back on top now and is offering better CPUS for less money than AMD. i do hope AMD re takes the lead, however, just because i like AMD does not mean that i am going to needlessly waist money.

now for the CPU, the cheaper, slightly faster, smaller micro arcetectured, less power consuming, cooler running, higher overclockable CPU i curently want is being stockpiled by intel until retailers sell off their stock of older CPU's with the same generic paper stats. i can not afford to be without a decent PC untill they get around to re suppling them. as a result, i am getting the older version. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115028

for ram, i am going with the one company that has never let me down once. Corsair. however, because of the current price of DDR3 ram, i am only getting 2 gigs at present. should be enough at those speeds for a little wile at least. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145183

and as always, a zalman after market CPU cooler.

the parts i am raping from my deceased PC to put into the new one include, EAVA 8800GT with 768MB of mem

a part from my original build all those happy years ago, sound blaster audigy 2zs sound card (forget the designation, was not pro, nor do i think it was the gamer or the regular one. point still remains, damn good card then, and still is now)

and finally, my hard drives. 1x 80GB seagate drive that had my OS on it (and might still have it intact depending on how bad my old computer writhed in its death throws. 2 x seagate 250 GB drives with most of my stuff on them (both where almost full) and finally, 2 X western digital 750GB drives that i never had a chance to put in my old comp before it died. all drives are 7200 RPM (not sure, but the new WD drives could possibly be the slightly slower power saver ones, but i dont really know. in any case, they should be fine as far as speed goes and more than make up for it with their combined total of around 1.20 TB of usable space)

any way, honestly dont know how well this system will run, nor do i know its potential life span and upgradability. feedback will be much appreciated.

The specs beat the hell out of my rig. 5 HDDs is pretty sick, but the PC power and cooling unit has a great reputation and should be up to it. It should be a great set up for a while, w/ DDR3 and 4(!) PCIe 16x slots. The only thing on the horizon is the socket change that's coming with Nehalem, but you're screwed on that front no matter what you do. Sounds like you have a real beast.

ya, got screwed on the lost mobo i got to as far as socket goes. AMD 939...that lasted a long time lol...

the LGwhatever 775 socket though, even if they change to a new socket type, i doubt i would have any trouble finding at least another 2 generations of CPU's to upgrade to from the one i just got. heck, they are pretty much already out. just way out of any sain persons price range lol.

still would like more feedback though, and also atomik, how does your comp run? what games if any does it lagg on?

EDIT: oh, also note, even thought they are full PCIE X16 slots, the mobo does NOT support SLI.....this is not a problem for me because i have allways favored one massive high priced card over 2 cards that cost just a little less a pop for a marginal increase in performance. and honestly, with 768 MB of grafics mem, why would you need more???

My 8500 GT and Pentium D runs HL2 and TF2 great. Crysis was even playable with a smooth framerate, although it was less than 30 fps I think. The game looks at least as good on low as a source game on high. It's ridiculous to think what that GTX could do to it.
