a few n00b questions, if I'm using dual channel do I keep the identical modules in identical channels, or identical dimms? channels = the slot pair and dimms = the same color.

also when running dual channel do all four pairs of memory need to match, or can I have 2 different sets?

It usually depends on your mobo. Look up the specs for that.

It used to be a big deal, but not as important anymore. I dont think dual channel has to do with slots. BUT, Im outta the loop. Art school... Rolling Eyes

I'm totally fucking confused. All I know is this: My motherboard has 4 DIMM sockets. Each one can support 1GB of RAM. They are orange and green. They are set like this:

O G O G

I have two pieces of 512MB RAM. I have one in each of the orange slots. It's dual channel. The two pieces are from a set, not mixed and matched.

yeah I have orange and yellow it goes OY OY the dimms are labeled 1 and 2 and that is the OY pair, however the channels would be colored OO.

The second question is if I have 2x 512mb pc3200 and 2x 1gb pc4000, can I use them in combination or will all memory clock down to 3200?

as long as both sticks that are running in the same colored slots are running at the same speed, it should be fine regardless of what speed the other 2 sockets are running at

Oh, it'll be fine. Good question though. Never really thought about that.I'm fairly certain the clock will be reduced to 3200. That's not really significant, though.

Most memory has been tested to run at slower speeds and will actually be spec'd that way. Some (mostly older) memory has trouble at speeds not listed in their specs. Usually you can google the manufacturer's numbers on the dimms and find the specs if you're in doubt. On most motherboards slots arn't much of an issue any more - but check the manufacturer's site.

I 'member back in the day, 99.9% of info was NOT online (the web wasn't even born yet) and it was a beotch - you lucky ass google-weened homos have it all at your fingertips!

I stopped trying to stay current on a lot of stuff because I could always "Google" it. Much more info now than before too, but teh Internets is still better than personal memory.
