I read that games will likely support XP until 2009. If you plan on having your machine longer than a year AND playing games Vista seems like the way to go.

So, you drank the koolaid?

I still get Windows 2000 updates/patches/etc. on my W2K box. The end of life for XP support just means you can't call MS for free XP tech support, and they've started the clock to countdown to when they don't have to support it. They MUST support it for a (?) number of years, it's law. So patches and fixes will still come out after a pointless SP3, even if they don't lunp them all in a SP4.

(XP SP3 will only be useful when reloading XP - cuz now when you load XP SP2 you have so dang many updates to apply it's ridiculous - they'll all be incl. in SP3)

As far as hating an OS that is released with so many usability issues, or blatant security issues such as XP was - the hate is actually a good thing. And theres nothing wrong to then retry the product after the necessary fixes are in place - but by then, I'll argue that its a different product.

But 2008 (vista) is a different year than 2001 (xp) and there are so many options available as viable alternatives. Buying an overpriced OS -- eww.

Yes I drank the koolaid. Very Happy Microsoft DOES use us as its test department (which is most regrettable) but it weilds the leverage to keep games optimized to its OS. I like games. Cool

Finally, sharkyextreme got around to it.

The new Wolfdales sound pretty interesting. I'm kinda bummed to learn that my 680i won't support a Yorkfield though. I think I'd disagree with an 8800 GTX as well. Take a look for yourself though.

Sweet article! perfect...

I would opt for the GTS over the GTX (if that's what you were referring to as well).

I would probably go with a less expensive case/power supply combo too. I think I could do as well for half the price (and still get a top-sheld PS).

That probably gets it to ~$2000 even. Razz

Hey, did everyone see Microsoft will stop supporting XP in 5 months!
(YES THIS JUNE!!!)

Ha ha, they must be extremely desperate. But anyways, fuck that. I'll never get Vista.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, 8800 GTS 512. Not getting the mouse, keyboard, 5.1 speaker system, sound card and 24" LCD brings it down way below $2000. I'm also not sure of the need for memory faster than DDR2-800. I don't think I'd want a beast of a full tower case. Even the Antec 900 that they recommend as the portable choice is pretty huge. It's got a 200mm top exhaust fan! Shocked

Yeah, its weird. Actually they might be supporting but not selling it. Too much grog. Razz They were going to stop selling on 31 Jan!!! But a customer petition had them extend it 5 months...

AT - they definitely had some weird/costly choices for secondary type stuff...

I made this rig for Trig. Is there anything that you would change for a $1600 budget? I forgot to add a power supply and he doesn't want to build it himself so I'm trying to save some money for BestBuy's Geek Squad.

Id probably go with a single uber-graphics card instead of the dual ATIs. I have read that not all programs support dual graphics cards.

Maybe a higher end Duo instead of a quad processor for similar reasons. But Im not as confident there. Just offering things to consider. Very Happy
