I read it required new architecture changes too. Though I am nt positive why XP couldn't be patched to cover the architecture shift but it did seem pretty significant hardware/bus-wise to me at the time. before I forgot like 50% of everything I know about PCs. Razz

Yup, they will. I don't know why their panties are all up in a bunch about it, it's still sold everywhere... I ain't switching. Period. I'll choose another OS if I have to. Vista is so buggy that it's not worth my time.

And you are basing that on? For some reason I only hear people who don't have Vista saying that.

The thing I don't hear from people who do have Vista is how great it is. I went looking for a reason to consider Vista on microsoft.com a couple months back, and I really couldn't find anything compelling.

I have Vista. And in my opinion if you are building a new system, go with Vista as it is going to get more support down the road and would be kinda silly to go to XP instead and only have to switch to Vista a year or so down the road. It is a good OS and it is better than XP, though it's not the "OMG UPGRADE TO THIS OS NOW ITS THAT GOOD" OS. So yea, when it comes down to it Vista>XP.

I dunno....there is a time when I would have agreed to go with the latest (service patched) OS, but now not so much. Ubantu is a fantastic OS and I use it on several desktops in my house. Sure, we have XP to play games and use CS3, etc. But with more and more open source apps, the primary reason that we have any MS OSes is to run PC games. The 2 laptops that came with Vista Home and Vista Premium are now happily running XP and Free BSD. We ran Vista for a bit, but all the eye candy in the world won't make up for the security bitch it has become. Clicking everything to do anything, back assword ways to configure shit, etc. etc. to me Vista sucks. I'll never run it, it's XP (and 1 2000 box) and Opensoure from here on out for me.

By far, my favorite box is the one with a drive drawer - I have 4 drawers, each with a 80, or 120GB hard drive with a different OS load. (2 configs of XP, 1 Ubantu, 1 Windows 2000) I dont have any crap loaded so all the configs run fast, and just the games or apps that are needed.

The more Microsoft supports DRM, the more I am persuaded to keep away from Vista.

Those are just Vista's default security settings. You can disable them, like I did. As a Linux user, you should know that everything requires a bit tweaking.

I'd run Ubuntu, if I didn't play games or if I had a spare PC.

Ya but they never gave a rat's ass about security, now it's security overboard. The pendulum swang to the other end.

I did turn all that shit off, but all my clients that have Vista hate it (but I'm not going to advise them to turn any of it off) plus I charge extra $ for Vista support just because I loathe it. That pretty much convinces them to stay with XP - or wish they had.

Most people that don't like vista don't like it because of what they have heard. Very few know firsthand and those that do are for the most part not very tech savy.

For those of us that are there are very small negativities about vista, and no not too much positive. In my personal opinion Vista is not worth Upgrading too, but if you are buying a new pc and want to use PC applications you would be best with vista.

Regardless of how you feel about the OS Microsoft will do everything in it's power to get you too switch.

You can always dual boot lynux or xp or mac os. I'm not sure how many of you have used mac os, but it's actually my favorite os when it comes to functionality and features.

Go look at user ratings at places where you can buy Vista. They are the same as when XP came out. Generic rants and people qualifying the purchase.

I read that games will likely support XP until 2009. If you plan on having your machine longer than a year AND playing games Vista seems like the way to go.

Hopefully the next round of hardware will be better able to take advantage of what good stuff Vista does offer. NOBODY builds hardware for the next OS. So..., give it some time, things will fall into place and Vistan and new hardware will Coombayah it so well you wont want the next new OS either.

I'll probably buy my academic copy of vista before I graduate (less than $20), but I'm not real excited to install it. I'll probably put a *nix on one of my partitions first.

Yeah, if you are a biz (not a gamer) there isn't much reason to go with a pricier/un-tested OS. True dat...

So, you drank the koolaid?

I still get Windows 2000 updates/patches/etc. on my W2K box. The end of life for XP support just means you can't call MS for free XP tech support, and they've started the clock to countdown to when they don't have to support it. They MUST support it for a (?) number of years, it's law. So patches and fixes will still come out after a pointless SP3, even if they don't lunp them all in a SP4.

(XP SP3 will only be useful when reloading XP - cuz now when you load XP SP2 you have so dang many updates to apply it's ridiculous - they'll all be incl. in SP3)

As far as hating an OS that is released with so many usability issues, or blatant security issues such as XP was - the hate is actually a good thing. And theres nothing wrong to then retry the product after the necessary fixes are in place - but by then, I'll argue that its a different product.

But 2008 (vista) is a different year than 2001 (xp) and there are so many options available as viable alternatives. Buying an overpriced OS -- eww.
