How do you fall asleep faster?

For all of my life, I've been one of those people that's had trouble getting to sleep. I always have tons of shit on my mind (not depressing stuff), and for a while I was able to alleviate that using a notepad and jotting down thoughts. Now that just makes it worse.

Lately I've really struggled and I can't seem to be asleep before 5AM going to bed even as early as one. Last night I spent the night at someone's house and had the worst time on their couch (wasn't too uncomfy) getting to sleep and I was unable to sleep for hours.

At VT orientation I tried listening to certain songs, but the next night when I tried that it did little as I immediately wanted to listen to more songs which got me riled up. Plus, this is ineffective, as I won't always have my Mp3 player locked and loaded.

Any ideas?

I've always been able to just hit my head on the pillow and sleep for hours. You could try doing a little exercise before sleeping, it might make you more tired.

I've had the same problem for as long as I can remember. I always hate it to, especially when you feel tired then go to lay down and your wide awake again. Only thing that I have found that sometimes helps me is reading something.

- go to sleep at the same time, wake up at the same time and make sure you have enough time before going to sleep.
- Have one or two hours for save, so that you will get 7-8 hours sleep for sure, just incase you don't fall asleep. This also helps and decreases the stress and fear of going to sleep.
- don't drink coffee, tea, cola or anything that will give you sugar and energy.
- Workout, bodybuild yourself and exercise. This will make you feel better overall.
- Eat healty, make sure that you will not get hungry during the night. This also will make you feel better overall.
- Have a day routine. Your body and mind will adapt to this and will make everything little easier. Also includes going sleep ect...
- When you don't fall asleep, don't try to too hard for it. Watch some movie, read book, or just surf on the internet. It's better to lose 1 or 2 hours than losing the whole night because of panic about not falling asleep.
- Try to calm yourself during the evenings, reading book, watching movie and just spent some time with yourself(not masturbating! Evil or Very Mad ) all alone. Drunken Monkey is right though wanking does help :>

^these are not easy to do and you need to change your lifestyle a little or even dramatically, but in the end it is worth it. You need to sacrifise some of the nice things in life, but nothing beats good night sleeps and overall good feel.

Don't listen to music because usually when you do, you listen to your albums and favourite bands. This will make you sort of 'wake up' and will make it harder to sleep for few hours.

Also if you are really sensitive when going to sleep(annoyed by noises, heat and so on), try to "eliminate" these problems. For excample I can't sleep when theres some annoing sounds on the background, so I just put my computer on for nights, and I can hardly hear anyhing else at all(takes time to get used to, but after weeks/months it doesn't bother that much).

And if nothing else works, then drink alcohol. Not too much tho...you don't want to have hangover when you wake up :< . Just enough to get steady-almoust-butnotreally-drunk mood where you are pretty relaxed and everything doesn't bother you. I use this method myself, once or twise a week when I can barely sleep. Don't listen to haters or abstinence supporters, alcohol is there to help you.

I don't suffer from sleep problems. Once I'm tired, game over. It's the waking up part that's tough for me. I've slept 3 days in a row before and I when I woke up I still felt like I could sleep longer.

If your schedule's messed up, there's this thing I'm trying this week myself. I called it Sleep reversal. Instead of going to be earlier or at the same time you normally would, you go to bed later than that.

So, if you can't go to bed until 5 AM, go to bed at 6 or 7. You will be tired, No? If you're still not tired, go to bed at 8 or 9 AM. Then you'll be knocked out. The next day, try to stay up until 10 or 11 AM. The next day after that, stay up until 1 PM. Keep doing that until you've got the right time in which you want to sleep, then... you absolutely must stick to it.

This may work for you, it may not. But i'm definitely trying it this week to fix my schedule (I'm finally done with work).

Lastly... Pills. Not everyone's favorite as it could make you dependent, blah blah blah. Buttsex.

That's actually just because you slept way too much. When you sleep longer than 8-9 hours it will have counter effect. Instead of feeling relaxed you will feel dull and tired. I have felt the same things, but that was only because I used to go to sleep WAY too late.

If you do what you said, it will just cause you screw up your schedule even more, as you and your body will get used to stay up longer and longer. But it can help you to adapt into new schedule, because staying up the whole night and going to sleep at the next evening, you will fall asleep in a seconds. Then you can easily make a new schedule and keep going with it.

I have met guys who has sleeping problems, but they really don't. They all have something in commong, like late night gaming, other shit they enjoy. They do that just before sleeping, during late at night(have only 5 mins untill they will exceed 8 hour recommented dream time), and then they complain that they can't sleep. What they don't realize is that you can's just expect to fall asleep right after so much of 'hazzle' in your brains/mind/body, more so if you can't fall asleep just snapping your fingers.

I can't even explain things because english is such a bitch of language, with all those fansy words I need to find typing them on Wikipedia or Google and encounter all kinds of disturbing pictures(had to google disturbing for correction and got pictures of dead dogs and naked men...). FFS I want to use my mother language! Finnish ftw - other languages ftl!!!

Edit. I'm trying to explain that your whole lifestyle determines how you feel during days and affects everything in you. I used to play/stay on my computer all day and all night. I felt tired and dull every day, because my body and I was stuck in this 'boredom/non-happening base'. Days went fast, nights went fast and I hated sleeping because it was painfull(because NOTHING really happened to make me tired(in other words: I didn't do anything nor did go anywhere to make me feel exhausted)). I decided to stop it and strated to exercise and even more importantly made a schedule when going to sleep and keeping it continually(I can't stress this enough, don't step away from it - try it for a long period of time and when you do step off from it - you will feel like shit).
Same goes for exercise. Keep doing to systematically and you will notice the difference. First it feels like fucking pain in the ass(once the "excitement" wores off), but when you FORCE yourself doing it - it will open your eyes and you can feel and even see the difference(ONCE you get there you don't want to stop, if you do you feel like shit).

Edit2. So I re-read your post and what you said had the same points...just put in weird complex stealth style.

Well you probably won't do this, but a nice bowl of ganja right before bed helps. I listen to music myself, never get past the second song even if it is something I haven't heard before. I can sleep anywhere and any time, like in class.

Try exercise as said before though, that also helps.

I played two hours of Ultimate today, so I'm exhausted. I've got another game tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I'm hoping at VT I can pick up an intramural and play sports regularly.

ja, I know about the counter effect thingy. The only thing that prevents me from sleeping that long is the fact that my back can't take it. It starts to hurt like hell. So it's like my little alarm clock.

I need about 4 alarms to wake me up on a day in which I have nothing to do.
