This just blows my mind. I have 3GB of ram in my computer. All are seated properly...

However, Dxdiag shows that I have 2 GBs, while the CPU-Z shows the correct amount of RAM I have.

Ex. User-posted image

Like what ze hell? Any comments/fixes? Seems like everything bases itself off of dxdiag... so when a program tries to upload my computer stats, it sees dxdiag and thinks I have 2GBs....

Best I can figure, DXDIAG can't detect that much RAM, while CPU-Z can. Just like my processor with hypertreading shows up as 2 physical CPUs in DXDIAG and a processor with HT in CPU-Z.

The problem is: DXDIAG sucks dick. The other day someone was just all, "Dude just use DXDIAG."

I was like, "damn why do I use all these tools I have when I could use dxdiag?"

Then I thought, "Oh, that's right, DXDIAG is a lying WHORE!"

I just googled DXDIAG RAM and I came up with:

http://forum.x86-secret.com/archive/index.php/t-5126.html

So, you're not alone Chase! Keep up the fight - use independent auditing tools Very Happy

Wow... *pc envy*

It might be that your RAM isn't configured right too, like different bus speeds was a problem on our research uber-machine at work a few years ago. ANy speed was fine as long as they were all the same. I think most machines now just use whatever they can and toss higher bus speeds. Whether they can all figure out differences in RAM speeds now???

There used to be issues in pairing too but I think that was fixed in most of the newer motherboards.

Placement of RAM can be important. If you have multiple slots they usualy require a certain order of placement, e.g., 0, 1, 2.

I know old Windows could not use more than x RAM unless the OS was tricked, i.e., you set the configuration to "server" or something too. Maybe your OS needs to be specially informed or has a limit???

THese are all old issues but ones I have suffered from first hand. Some software might see the RAM but it doesn't prove your machine does. I suspect multiple apps will give you different answers too, and none guaranteeing anything. Hmm... Maybe you can try to run 2.5GB of apps simultaneously (or 2GB+virtual mem limit...). THAT should prove something. Razz

Ja, I originally came across this problem and thought I had messed it up. Then after talking with ze Boomx2 and looking in the manual, I realized I had done it correctly in the first place. So I switched it back.... that was a fun day.

Well I went to Virtual Memory and it said my max MB size could be 3GBs. So I'm pretty sure it has it now. Dxdiag just won't read it. :/ I then set it to see if it could do 2.5GBs. It did it.... so I guess that's proof. xD

EDIT:

Oddly, in my Task Manager... it says I'm only using 2GBs.

But in the control panel, under system, in Virtual Memory, it says that I have up to 3GBs.

Is it like... ignoring that extra gig in some cases? Or is Windows XP just screwedz0rs or something.

I should just get 4GB if it were to fix this minor confused problem. I'll need it within the next year or two anyways as I will have this computer for a very long time if it doesn't die.

EDIT x2: After looking at that... maybe I did that little test wrong or something. So, I just tried to run all the applications I could think of... I couldn't even near 2GBs. It stayed roughly around 1.17 GBs.

I Opened:

Steam
Photoshop
Go Live
BF2 Editor
Battlecraft
Xfire
Hamachi
3DS Max
Puzzle Pirates
Core FTP Lite
Beyond Media

Around this time.. the more I added,it didn't affect the RAM usage.

Maybe doing a LAME encoding while doing a video compression in the background will get you closer.

Try and open up a paint document that's 3' x 5' at 300 dpi. That helped me figure out once that I didn't have 3 gigs of ram.

That picture got me to the 1.14GB mark. But a second one wouldn't add. So I decided to open all the programs once again, but this time to really really push it up pass 2.5.

Here's my results:

User-posted image

List of Programs:

FireFox,
Xfire,
Photoshop,
BF2 Editor,
3DS Max 7 AND 8,
PUzzle Pirates,
Beyond Media,
Steam,
Windows Media Player,
Winamp,
Vent,
VLC Media Player,
Yahoo Messenger,
iTunes, Visual C++,
Last.fm,
Bang! Howdy,
Core FTP Lite,
Smart FTP,
Internet Explorer,
Logtech Quick Camera,
uTorrent,
Google Earth,
Notepad,
EA Downloader,
Battlefield 2,
Half Life 2,
Lexmark Solutions
Hamachi

This doesn't include the programs that run in the background:
Bluetooth
DAEMON
Music Match Jukebox
McAfee Security Center
X-Fi Volume System
QuickTime
SanDisk TransferMate
OpenOffice
Adobe Version Cue CS2

So I guess... It uses that 3GBs, but it doesn't have it displayed correctly.

It says 4GBs I think... But RAM isn't my strongest forte'. So this is pretty much gibberish to me.

Can someone break it up in lamen's terms?

I think it says I need to make some configuration a /3GB switch of some kind. But I'm not sure.

Virtual Memory is fake RAM running on your hard drive. Razz Sorry for the confusion.

I also had one mobo with 3 slots but you could only use two. There is another gotcha to add to the list. :/ It is a hassle managing your own rig sometimes... I need to build myself a new one pretty quick. Ill get to remember the hassles, and the satisfaction. Unfortunately I only build one every three years or so, so a re-education on latest hardware is always required to boot...

Maybe all the mobo can handle is 2GB. I recommend you read the mobo manual. It may say something in there. I cannot believe XP couldnt handle it.
