This stupid piece of crap hard drive isn't working.... I've got a PPA Int'l U-Storage external case, housing a Western Digital Caviar SE 7200rpm 80gig internal HD. When I first hooked it up, windows read it, I initialized it, started the format, it finishes and says that it was unsuccesully completed. Next thing I know, it's not showing up in device manager, it's not even showing it as connected. WTF is going on?

Tried it, 3 times. Sad Could the failed format have done anything to it?

OK, hard drives that go on IDE cables need to know where teh fuck they are on the cable and what they do. The IDE protocol is very old and immensely shitty. Hard drives have 3 settings, MASTER, SLAVE, and the more modern CABLE SELECT.

Initially, one drive on the IDE cable was the master drive, and the other would be the slave. Eventually they came out with a nice feature called Cable Select which did all the work for you and CS didn't really give a shit. However, AFAIK, some companies still use Master/Slave even when they only have one drive on the fucking thing.

Sometimes, CS is not compatible with M/S, so you need to then fucking slice your arms off to find out what the first drive is, and then either adjust that to CS or just adjust the second drive to whatever the first drive isn't.
