Ok so I have a windows XP disc, however now i need to activate it. All the activation cd keys we have used have been invalid. Does it matter what kind of CD key we use if it was a Dell/Compaq/etc Windows XP disc?
Do we need another Disc, or should I Just keep looking for generic xp professional cd keys?

XP requires online activation I think. I tried loading my XP Pro (a legitimate edition Razz) on my print server but it didn't work - even offline. I think you need to call in if offline...

I am sure someone somewhere figured it out. But, if I couldn't even get my own cd to work on a 2nd machine I think you are going to need to break down and BUY software fi you want XP. Very Happy

I think your best bet would be a keygen if you have already activated it on another computer. It should give you about a month or so to get it figured out before it stops working. If the disk hasen't been used on another comp (either it is brand new or it has already been installed on the same hard drive) call up MSFT and ask em "WTF?!"

No idea what you're talking about, I've never ever done such things.

I had to do exactly what Brutus was saying when I installed my motherboard on this machine.

Except, it gave you a code. You had to call the place and then tell them the code. They activated it for you and gave you another code so you could use the software.

It all depends on the build of the disc you used to load it.

In the windows explorer window click the Help option on the main
toolbar. from the drop down menu click the About option. Your version number is there. For example my version is Version 5.1 (build
2600.xpspsp2.050301-1526 Service Pack 2)

There is also a little icon that should show up in the bottom right portion of your screen (I believe it looks like pair of keys).

When I had to reformat my HDD for my new bios Windows XP HOME asked me to activate it. I own my XP disk and key. Since I didnt have internet at the time I just called the tech support number they gave me and did it over the phone. This security feature is present on every Windows disk but some computers are already pre-activated for windows(information stored in BIOS). The link below contains information about activation.
