I want to build a cheap less than 600$ preferrably like 300 if possible music computer. I would use it as a stereo, or I am considering hooking it up and running it as a streaming audio server that way we could use it in ts, or anyone could listen to it if they got bored w/ w/e they were listenuing to. Basically i am looking for a list of computer parts and prices/links that you all recommend. Basically large hard drive enough ram, but not to much. Decent sound card, good motherboard, alright processor.

Basically the comp would only be used to play music, and stream it. So I don't need an top of the line stuff....

so far I'm looking at getting 2 of these: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1265028&sku=THD-250A

also the memory doesn't look so bad, but you guys double check me onthsi 1: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=586829&Sku=ULT30215

need suggestiosn on a cheap case, and other supplies...

cool looking case. I'll get a shittier 1 if the budget gets to high http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811156177 or

If you are looking to do something with streaming audio, I would reccomend a DFI LAN party motherboard since the network ports on it are extremely fast. And for just music, you probably couldn't go wrong with even as a small as an 80 gig hd. When you are looking at the DFI boards, make sure they support the AMD Sempron processor since they are generally the least expensive. If it is going to be for audio, I think you could splurge a bit on the sound card and get something from one of the major brand names like creative. If it will be used as a server, you're probably looking at about 512 mb or ram, and I suppose if you were reeealy cutting corners, you could drop down to 256, but 512 is probably your best bet if you are expecting a lot of people to be accessing it.

Also, if you didn't have too much opposition, you could probably find some good Linux audio distribution server thingy. This would be great since windows is sooo expensive and linux has better stability for running a server.

Yea no question on the OS, windows is not the way to go, linux is. Although I do have a free unused copy of win xp, courtesy of the university. But that will prob. end up on my bro's comp.

As far as memory I want 512, but I don't know a lot about brands/speeds/whatever else.

I really need help finding a decent processor with a good speed for my requirements. I really know very little-nothing on processors, however I would like to go with an AMD. If you guys could pick out the right speed for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

as far as the sound card I am considering stealing the 1 out of this comp. it is and Creative audio pro zs, and frankly it kicks ass. However I'm only going to do this depending on how $ I have left.

Corsair valueselect is probably your best bet if you want to get a lot for a little
As far as processor, buy the fastest processor in the AMD Sempron series that still fits your budget, which I think will end up being about 1.7ghz 333-400mhz FSB.
And that soundcard sounds good Very Happy

Good luck getting the Creative Audio Pro ZS to work under linux. I can't even begin to imagine how bad those drives have to be.

So far I think your choices have actually been pretty good for a budget comp. Good HDD choice, good RAM choice. All you need is a shitty motherboard with some integrated crap, and then a good soundcard.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=241573

^^ there's a nice cheap-cheap mobo with all you'll ever need. Chaintech is a brand I'd "half trust", because my video card is pretty good.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80281-0

^^ here's a crappy Duron for under $50.

So now you have under $50 for CPU and MOBO

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=140112

^^^ $93 cube case (ideal for said server), perhaps a little pricey

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811108347

^^^ ok, $45, a little better.

Ah, wang has a point. You should probably research the info on soundcards under linux. I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruise and only 2 out of my 5 speakers seem to want to work. It shouldn't be too big of a problem, just do your homework on the soundcard and the linux distribution before you invest too much time into it.

Is that compatable with the ram hd and tower case that I posted up top?
I need a tower that can stand upright, most likely on a shelf.

also does the mobo support a raid array? I'm not sure if the motherboard has to or what :S
