Anyone here besides me actually sail on a constant basis? I've been in many regattas/races, enjoy leisure sailing too. All ocean sailing, none of that boring lake stuff.
I sail on these various types of boats:
Lasers:
420s:
Sunfish:
Beetle Cat (these are very popular wooden boats sailed in team racing in New England, especially in Buzzards Bay (where I am in the summer)
Optimists (what I used to sail that little kids learn to solo-sail on):
Finally, my parents saved up a lot and recently bought a Sakonnet
Which is a great boat to mess around in, with benches on the sides, very comfortable for a boat that size.
Also my grandfather owns a very beautiful 41' narrow-keeled sloop I go out on on occasion (including at the head of Hurricane Bob)
Does anyone else here sail boats at all? _________________

I grew up in Salem, MA; and I used to race Lasers around Marblehead harbor and off the lighthouse point in that area. Hell of a good time! Also taught sailing to kids in Widgeons in Salem harbor, for fun we would take them over by the power station and teach them how to right a boat after capsize. Of course when we did it we were in the warm water output from the power plant, we would move them downwind about 200 yards and have them do it is the freaking COLD waterrr. Stupid but funny when you are 18. One of my favorite times was doing a three day sail on an all wood 46' yawl.
But then I got married...and well you know what happens then. _________________

Yeah, my antique harleys got shot by "the kids" bullet. They are probably buried next to your sail boat. _________________

My gramps is a sailor man. I really don't like it at all, but once I went to a sailing race with him and it was neat. _________________ is now -=|CT|=- Frothy Mixture

Ocean sailing is somthing thats been fascinating me for years now. I've done lots of boating, but only for fishing, (and wakeboarding,) but none for actual sailing sport. I like in a pretty ideal place to get started, so I think this thread will be the final straw, and its time for me to get off my sorry ass and go sailing. _________________

A full sized adult can easily sail a laser, although you don't have a cockpit you sit on (this is the case with most smaller racing boats) when you race you're usually up on the rail (the edge) of the boat unless you're going downwind. The reason for this is that you need to "hike out" (lean out) over the edge of the boat to keep it balanced/from flipping in higher winds, and at the same time you want to be as far forward on the boat if you're ever upwind/on any kind of a reach so as to attain maximum speed.
I've also sailed a bunch of cats, we had an old hobie a long time ago, and a good friend of myne with his dad just bought an F-18, one of the fastest boats in the world:
The crew (second person who doesn't hold the tiller--steering mechanism) can be seen hiking out on a "trap" or trapese which is a harness attached to the mast that allows you to hike out so far that only your feet are touching the side of the boat. In this case the skipper (one steering) is on a trap as well.
These boats are totally nuts, tons of fun, really really fast, and really really dangerous.
The sexiest part of sailing is that you're moving only by the power of wind. _________________
