and I can't fix it!!!! so, my good computer that can run BF2 will most certainly be out of commission for quite some time, at least until I send it back to gateway and make them fix it... I checked, it's NOT the cable from the HD to the mobo, so don't ask Crying or Very sad it's just..... dead, after my dad hard-restarted it... a buddy of mine said the surface of the HD might have gotten scratched all to heck, any suggestions?

Describe the cables cnnecting the HDD to the mobo.

BTW hard drive surfaces don't get scratched. The magnetic head doesn't touch the drive. If it does, well, then it's way fuckin' more than a scratch.

if you havent already sent it to gateway, you could just put another hd in it until you can get it replaced. i would say if it is still under warranty, just send it in and use another comp for the 6-8 weeks or whatever.

Well, you told me "when I go to install windows it doesn't even show the drive" ... that doesn't sound like a failing HDD, that sounds more like not installing 3rd party drivers associated with the drive.

BLEH idk what the problem is.. (it stopped working again)
I boot it up, it sits there forever, then finally goes to a screen that says something along the lines of "cannot boot from device - insert boot disk", the device being the hard drive, and when I go into BIOS, it doesn't detect my HDD, and how would I go about installing 3rd party drivers onto something it doesn't even think is there? I'm thinking it's probably the cord but I can't check it.. since my dad thinks I broke it he won't let me open it up... :/
but whatever, if I can't get it fixed I'll just be around a lot less often *quiet yaaaay comes from crowd*

You usually would install the third party drivers with a floppy disk. You probably had a RAID array or some SATA setup, who knows, I sure wished you asked before you decided to reformat gung-ho Neutral

Hey Choc, I had that problem not long ago. Would that happen to be a Maxtor drive?

A similar problem happened also where my bios just decided to switch disk boot priority and was trying to boot from the drive where my OS isn't. You might futz around with that....is the drive recognized in your bios?

Hell if all else fails, you get home from school before the old man, eh? What he doesn't know won't hurt him....what the hell am i saying? * goes to see what daughter is doing*

LMAO, well, the problem's solved, but not fixed, I took a little peek inside, and yeah, it's the cord, all frayed and.. not good.. don't ask me how it got frayed either Neutral, all I know is I messed w/ it and electrical taped it up a bit and it booted just fine Smile so it'll have to do until I convince my dad to get another wire (and get someone else to switch them Razz) so, problem solved, glad I looked inside BEFORE I reformatted it Very Happy
