Post subject: The Official "How to be L337" Guidlines
Top Reply with quote

preface.

let me preface this by saying that being leet generally only requires the use of words, and they need only be typed and not spoken. it is easy to teach someone a set of vocabulary, so learning to be leet is easy. however, i must also say that being leet is not cool:
-it will not get a guy/girl to like you
-it will not get you more friends
-it will not get you better grades
-it will not make you get stronger or run faster

-it will not help you make more money
-it will not make you cool at all.

what is leet?

leet is a computer word that is derived from the english word 'elite'. it originally referred to people or things that were actually elite, in a nerdy computer sense. now it generally replaces the phrases 'cool' or 'awesome' or 'good at computer stuff'.

it can be used in any of the following forms:
-leet
-l33t
-1337
-ejeet*
-3j33t*

*generally more uncommon terms

when is leet used?

leet should generally only be used online. if you are using it in regular english, you had better own a dot com company, work at a computer programming or designing all day, or at least own a leetcore shirt or 2.

some good places to use the term 'leet':
-mIRC
-counter-strike
-battlefield 1942
-AIM
-counter-strike: source
-your favorite forum

am i leet yet?

heck no you're not, the word leet is just the beginning. there are a plethora of leet words and rules you need to be able to use to understand, including the following topics.

"kthx."

kthx is a shortened version of the words "okay" and "thank you" combined. this word, however, does not merely mean "okay thank you", it is usually used as a snobbish way to end a conversation. take the following conversation for example..

chase: why did you buy the new taking back sunday cd?
kevin: i liked the first one, so i thought this one would be good
chase: taking back sunday sucks ass, kthx.

as you can see, adding kthx to the end of his last statement gives it more force and finishes the conversation off really nicely, leaving kevin all but useless.

"rofl", "lmao", and "lol"
rofl is a common acronym for "rolling on the floor laughing". lmao stands for "lauhing my ass off", and lol stands for "laughing out loud". however, these terms have much more use in a leet setting.

for instance, they can be combined with any number of rhyming words, or even words that have nothing to do with them to make crazy leet combinations. some more obvious terms would include:
-lmaonaise (mayonaise)
-lolerskates (rollerskates)
-lolercoaster (rollercoaster)
-lolar bear (polar bear)
-lols royce (rolls royce)
**See bottom for complete list**

other, more rediculous, terms include leet train and roflcopter. they don't make any sense, but you can see where they likely started or became famous at here or here.

"own", "pwn", and "phwn"

the term own and owned are commonly used in online games. when one player defeats another, he can easily express his joy by explaiming "owned" or "you got owned". online gaming is usually fast paced though, and typos cause o's to be come p's. that is where pwned came from. the term pwn has come to carry more weight than it's root of own. while meaning the same thing, it is better to pwn someone than to own them.

pwn is pronounced like own, but with a p (pone, poned). i made up phwn one day talking to someone online. it is pronounced (and means) "phone". feel free to use that one.

"haxor" and "roxor"

most leet stuff was started by hackers back in the day. a leet way of typing out the world hacker is haxor. an even leeter way to type is is by switching out some of the letters with numbers, for instance h4x0r. multiple hackers would be denoted with a trailing z (h4x0rz). many words can have xor or xorz added to the end. the most common include roxor (rock -- the act of rocking), boxor (box -- computer), suxor (suck), fuxor (the f word).

"teh", "yuo", and "joo"

using numbers to replace vowels is an extremely leet way to type, and so is spelling words wrong. one of the most common ways to appear leet is to spell the word "the" as "teh". this is a typo caused by typing the e with the left hand before the right hand types the h. if someone spells it wrong commonly, they might be leet.

the word you can be spelled many ways. some include "u", "yuo", and "joo".

the end!!1

finally, just spell stuff wrong, use mad numbers, and let go of shift early (hence !!!!!!!!!!11111111111) many ejeet h4x0rz will be able to see right through you, because you are such a nub (noob, or newb, or newbie) but once you get r00t on their b0x0rz j00 will pwne tehm1111!1

**Complete List of lol,rofl,lmao,wtf,etc. Combo's**

-lmaonaise (mayonaise)
-lolerskates (rollerskates)
-lolercoaster (rollercoaster)
-lolar bear (polar bear)
-lols royce (rolls royce)
-roflcopter (helocopter)
-roflcraft (any type of craft, normally space)
-lolcity (city)
-wtfclouds* (clouds)
-AFK47s* (ak47s pwn j00)
-lmaoplane (air plane)
-SS AFK* (refering to a ship of somekind)
-TTYLnukes (nuclear missles)
-L337train (train stupid)
-lolbillies* (hill billies)
-roofletrain (a train)
-steamloller* (steam roller)
-lollercaust*! (holler caust, but warning, many people find this offensive.)
-lolympics* (the olympics)
-roflamethrower (a lame flamethrower)
-rofl3000* (some idiot wanted to be cool so he add 3000 to the end of rofl)
-lolcano* (volcano)
-roofleak (clever use of roofle, roof + leak)
-rofl waffles (funny one, one of my favs, rofl + waffle)
----------The Roots of these words---------
All words stated above are combonations of several accronyms used in an online setting. Normally games such as the ones mentioned above, but these have become ever more popular in the online chatting world. The roots:

-Lol (laugh out loud)
-Rofl (roll on floor laughing)
-Omg (oh my god)
-Wtf (what the f*ck)
-Afk (away from keyboard)
-thnx (thanks)
-lmao (laughing my @ss off)
-lmfao (laughing my f*cking @ss off)

*Usually a more uncommon word. Say this in a n00b L337 setting and you'll get a "wtf?". Or if the n00bs are stupid, you'll just get a "LOL".

Also, I'll be adding to this with an addition to the lol, rofl, lmao, their list of different ways to say them, proper uses of them etc. And I'll be putting together a L337 insults guidline, which I'll need some help with from the pros, pete, wang Smile

4 p146|_|3 4' 807h j00r h0|_|535! = A plague a' both your houses!

ROOFLEAK = my own creation of the lollerskater kind of words. It's unique because the original form (roof leak) doesn't change at all when changed into a lolarbear word. It simply smashes up into ROOFLEAK, which as you can see not only conatins ROOF and LEAK but ROOFLE.

LOL nice post Milk. Hmm since I've been a Senior Database Programmer for 10 years and now a Project Manager for the Web and have not even heard of the term 'leet', I'll just attribute it to another new fad... Although I constantly misspell the word teh.

Excellent & informative article Milk? With your kind permission I shall use it in next terms curriculum Wink

My personal favourite has been omitted however:

“I pwn youaw”

Which generally means someone was discovered mid gloat & was unable to manoeuvre out of the way; otherwise known as a type kill. Nothing makes me smile more with the exception of listening to CT teamspeak!
