if ya ask me... any repeating number is BS. The measurement HAS to end somewhere at sometime.

Other way to prove .999... = 1 is:

1/3 x 3 = 1

1/3 = 0.333...

0.333... x 3 = 0.999...

Edit: wow, this became a four-page topic in under 12 hours! Shocked

heres how 3=5....

Theorem : 3=4
Proof:
Suppose:
a + b = c
This can also be written as:
4a - 3a + 4b - 3b = 4c - 3c
After reorganising:
4a + 4b - 4c = 3a + 3b - 3c
Take the constants out of the brackets:
4 * (a+b-c) = 3 * (a+b-c)
Remove the same term left and right:
4 = 3

ok, now since 4 = 3... lets make 4 =5

Theorem: 4 = 5
Proof:
16 - 36 = 25 - 45
4^2 - 9*4 = 5^2 - 9*5
4^2 - 9*4 + 81/4 = 5^2 - 9*5 + 81/4
(4 - 9/2)^2 = (5 - 9/2)^2
4 - 9/2 = 5 - 9/2
4 = 5

soooooo since 3 = 4 now & 4 = 5, then 3 = 5

The only issue I see here is conflicts with Occam's razor. Why do all of those steps just to prove that retarded thing?

So far, USAF's rendition of Sully's proof actually makes the most sense and appears to be the simplest.

A lot of proofs are long and complicated. His are broken in other ways.

Common sense always kicks ass...

1/3 does indeed equal .3~ ... divide one over three and see what happens.

but by definition, .999999... will never reach 1

and u cant add repeating decimals, theyre irrational #'s... u can only approximate

No. By definition, 0.999... is one. I can explain why tomorrow when I'm awake. It's not reaching one. It is one. There are already an infinite number of 9's.

They are not irrational numbers. An irrational number is a number than cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers. zero-point-three-repeating is 1/3 and zero-point-nine-repeating is 1/1. Examples of actual irrational numbers include pi, e, and the square root of two.

OMG I thought this was an interesting philosophical post but now it is going tard. 0.999 = 1 is an advertising attitude, not an engineering approach... 0.999 = 1 ONLY if:
1. you are too lazy to measure,
2. don't care,
3. cannot measure accurately enough (in which case you don't really know it was 0.999...)

The problem is perspective, or lack thereof. Lets try tossing out the 0.001 (.999 = 1 was the order magnitude under which this premise was offered) and see if it would make a difference.

In this case something = lightyear.
.001 lightyear = 9,460,528,000km
Earth distance from Sun = 149,597,890km

It is a very good thing that whatever forces put Earth in its current orbit didnt use a lightyear ruler and the 0.999 = 1 philosophy. Hell, even 0.001 of the "negligible 0.001 would have snuffed the world as we know it. This order of magnitude is ridiculuous to talk about in realistic terms but so is 0.999 - 1)

Talk about it in class, read about it on the Internet, don't bring it to the shop or the bank (aka reality).

Order of magnitude was 0.999... with nines repeating forever, 0.999 non-repeating of course does not equal one, it'd 0.999, that's why we have the ... or the ~ to show that the nines never stop.

0.999 = 0.999, but 0.99999999999999999999.......... = 1
0.333 != 1/3, 0.33333333333333333333333....... = 1/3 (try long division if you really want to say it doesn't)

Lies, LIES! It can go on forever if we want it to. We made the number system up and that's how it rolls.

No, we weren't pwned. Brutus was completly wrong. It isn't zero with three nines after the decimal place, it's zero with infinitely repeating nines after the decimal place. Do a google search and you'll turn up a proof using calculus based on infinite summation. 0.99999.... equals 0, and that is universally accepted among mathematicians.
