For any ~ to any"..." = something quantified then the quantifiable math will be the same. No matter how far down the rabbit hole you go .9~ = .9~. You just have to have the gumption to bring your ass down there. Using .09 was easiest example - if you use .99999 or whatever you'll get the same answer. AND If .99 = 1 then it would be called 1, AND for functional brevity call 1 "1" instead of "0.9~".
Ever see that movie "Office Space"? A federal Jury probably wouldn't have seen their 0.0000001 = 0.0 either.
Good post.

Actually I was agreeing you. n00b. I cited Godel's Theorem, because that's what always reminds me that when I get frustrated by math I have to keep in mind that it's a simple system of measure that WE created.
Instead of ranting on and on to disprove your bashing of me, I'll be looking at ASCII pron on three monitors. Thus I will have three times the chicks that you will at any given time, guaranteed! In addition, these chicks won't nag me for money or anything. We'll see who has the fatter wallet when we're done. _________________ is now -=|CT|=- Frothy Mixture

LOL
Its your pirate berfday so enjoy all 3 monitors!!! Bet you couldn't use the mouse and the keyboard too though. Do the math.
Math is definitely manufactured. But it is also the world's universal (and most anal) language - so it dont hurt to speak it a little. _________________

there is absolutely no reason that it would ever matter if .9~ = 1 . at all. i'm not satisfied with that proof anyway, you can't do accurate mathematical caculations with repeating numbers as far as i know. there's another way to disprove this theorem (it's a common one on the internet) but i don't care enough to find it.
in reality, it doesn't matter.

Fine. I'm sorry Wang.
Brutus:
You're missing the point. We arn't cutting off the nines at any point. They are infinitely repeating. If you have any finite number of repeating nines after the decimal point, it does not equal zero. But if you have infinitly repeating nines, it equals one.
And Jabberwocky:
There is a calculus based proof that uses infinite series that addresses the proof more directly. I didn't post it because I've taken enough calculus to understand the setup and why it would work, but not to actually do the final steps. _________________ sig...?

mathematical proofs, theorems, and such aside, .9999999~ will never=1. If it did, it wouldnt exist, it'd be 1.
.99999~can't be absolutely equivalent to one, because there's always the .000000000000000~1 that will make it 1. you can't have 1 whole if you've only got part. mathematically and theortically, it's possible, but in reality, it's not.
no matter what you say, the man who got .9999~ of a pie will never be as happy as the man who got 1 whole cherry pie. _________________ -=|CT|=-Padfoot

Theorem : 3=4
Proof:
Suppose:
a + b = c
This can also be written as:
4a - 3a + 4b - 3b = 4c - 3c
After reorganising:
4a + 4b - 4c = 3a + 3b - 3c
Take the constants out of the brackets:
4 * (a+b-c) = 3 * (a+b-c)
Remove the same term left and right:
4 = 3
ok, now since 4 = 3... lets make 4 =5
Theorem: 4 = 5
Proof:
16 - 36 = 25 - 45
4^2 - 9*4 = 5^2 - 9*5
4^2 - 9*4 + 81/4 = 5^2 - 9*5 + 81/4
(4 - 9/2)^2 = (5 - 9/2)^2
4 - 9/2 = 5 - 9/2
4 = 5
soooooo since 3 = 4 now & 4 = 5, then 3 = 5 |

They would be just as happy, because zero point nine repeating is just another way of saying one! Just like zero point three repeating is just another way of saying one third. _________________ sig...?
