Is this shit any good? I've heard nothing but good things, but are the joints it makes any good? I also hear that it's a no-no for sensitive circuitry.

If that's the case, what the fuck do I use to solder sensitive circuitry!?!

I've never used one of those cold ones, but it's no big deal to solder it regular. Like Supa, I learned at a young age. Just don't heat it up too much, get it quick Wink

It wasn't the fancy shit that got me, but the cord REALLY annoyed me. Then again, I do have a pretty shitty iron.

My dad showed me a few good soldering tricks but he was like "wow I suck I haven't done this in 40 years .. literally". The only things i've done so far is taken out the RCA jacks and switches from a VCR by heating the connections up and taking 'em out.

ok, cold heats are NOT good for circuits, they use electricity directly & can fry components....

heres a lil tip for u tho

how to put wire leads on a board:

1. tin the end of the wire u want on the board, tin it fairly thick

2. let that cool completely (10-20 seconds should be enuf)

3. place the wire where u want it to be stuck & place the hot iron about 1/4 inch up the tinned wire & leave it there

4. wait for it to send a bead of hot solder down the wire, itll pool up at the bottom of where your holding the wire (this is the finesse part, u dont wanna let so much run down that it crosses to another track, or starts melting your board, but you dont want so little that it doesnt stick)

5. when the bead hits the botom of the wire, take the iron off & hold the wire in place & count to 10 or so (u can see it dry if u look really hard, it goes from gloss to matte) maybe blow on it a bit

6. if its a good solid connection, in the case of your phone base, you should prolly be able to lift the whole thing up by that wire, unless its a big clunky base, then maybe not, but most of my connections would lift an average comp mobo by the lead i put on (ive used a shelled mobo for practice)

the biggest thing is practice, if u dont do it for a while, id to 2 or 3 on an old board u got layin around, soldering 2 wires together is one thing, boards are totally different, im sure ull get it tho... this is a good guide for ayone wanting to hack up various electronics

tinning means putting a coat of solder on it.... basically u just hold the iron on the wire for like 30 ses & then rub a piece of solder on it (the wire), it usually doesnt take much, just so the wire looks silver instead of copper

Do what supa said, I have only solderd water pipes and stuff like that, not comps��..it does come in handy when building a house though��and yes welding is a LOT more fun��.but then again I use a oxi setalain torch to heat up the pipe��..not a iron��..

But what I really wanted to post about is the cold heat thing��though I have never used one, and have no need to get one, there is a LOT of slight of hand in there commercials��..don�t trust them
