Books/Reading section

I was wondering if anyone else thinks it would be a good idea to have a section to discuss books and other reading materials here. We don't really seem to have a place for that right now. After all, if those math nerds get a section, I get my reading section! It's only fair.

I've been thinking about Sleeples' comic stuff and the reviews I want to do for the classical literature I've been reading and I think we could lump it all into its own section just to sort things out. It'll definitely keep order and it may even spur some new activity.

I also read quite a lot. Even though I'm slow reader, but still.

Currently besides weekly Economics magazine, I'm reading Toby Wilkinson's "The rise and fall of ancient Egypt". Very interesting stuff.

Allow me to firmly throw my support behind both the wheel of time and the game of thrones series. Both are fantastic fantasy series, albeit via different scales. And if anyone disrespects Tolkien, they best be beheaded

The Wheel of Time series is one of my favorites. Never finished reading them, I think the last one I read was the ninth. I'll have to get the books from Bary again sometime to read through them.

Here are my recommendations (these are my favorites in fiction):

I really enjoyed the two trilogies: Stephen R. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant - now because of this post I had to look up the official title, and have discovered that there is a final trilogy of, well actually 4 books, whatever that is called - so i'm on amazon ordering them already! (Thanks Vlad!)

I also highly recommend the Barsoom novel series by Edgar Rice Burroughs - "John Carter of Mars" Captivated me as a teen. Still look fondly at that series of like 12 books.

Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern (two trilogies I think) was a unique series - and I really enjoyed that as well.

JRR Tolkeins works are my absolute favorites and I stay away from all other fantasy writers that are in some form Tolkein rip offs that include elves, dwarves, orcs, etc.. in their stories.

The Silmarillion has some incredible tales and writing that gives some great pre-history of Middle Earth and includes Sauron's Master (Morgoth) who was a completely different (higher) category of creature than Sauron (who was the same type of base creature as Gandalf and Saruman)

Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth is a collection of stories and essays by J. R. R. Tolkien that were never completed during his lifetime, but were edited by his son Christopher Tolkien

EDIT: I think I have read everything by Arthur C Clarke - his vision and imagination were epic... he actually invented the idea of a space elevator - which I hope to see in my lifetime...
