That is the shit what one of the ex-music business man said a while ago. If they would charge some money to use the site, he said 50$ a year, the whole fucking music industry would make more money than they would have ever made in total.

But I believe this idea will be rocketed to shit of hell when the copyright owners get to say at what price they can provide the content. Maxium price and you will end up with some shit deals like 5$ per 500mb or something.

Anyway I'm little drunk again, so will check this out tommorrow. Laughing

They expect to compete against mininova and all the other trackers? Money vs. free?

It's about the service. If the fee is small and the service is soooo much better than other free tracker sites, then I believe it can be highly succesfull. And it would be totally legal, now you woudn't have any limits or fear what to upload. And maybe even the companies can add their stuff on the site and take part in uploading if they gain enough money from it.

What I read is that they try to gain more money with the site through ads and because the thing is free(uploading is still done by users, this time around they actually gain something out of it) it's pure profit for the site owner. They then share the revenues with copyright owners, which could be millions. This is how the Spotify works(free), through ads which they will then share and Spotify has a membership option(with fee), which offers better service if you need it. Since I started using Spotify I haven't downloaded a single track, because I like this service better and chances are that I get the new good quality realease first(Dream Theater's ect...).

There is this whole shit with Pirate Pay selling out and just taking the money and running away. It could be a plot to just shut down the site.

I was also told that it won't make the fee manditory, if there is one at all. They want to generate revenue for the content providers as well as starting up almost a dozen new projects or so. They also are working on decentralizing.

I told Scabdates to post about this but he's too lazy I guess - he is the torrent master.

I'd like to start off this post by explaining a few things:

1. Mininova is not a torrent tracker. Mininova is a torrent indexer. Most of its torrents are tracked by The Pirate Bay. If the Pirate Bay were to theoretically go down or lose all of its users (neither of these things is very likely) Mininova would as well. Honestly, The Pirate Bay is one of the last big public trackers left; If it disappeared, the public torrent community might never recover.

2. Hirmuinen is on the right track. The company that bought them is attempting to reimburse the copyright owners. They're not charging you to download torrents. They are NOT charging you to download torrents. THEY ARE NOT CHARGING YOU TO DOWNLOAD torrents.

3. The Pirate Bay was already bought by an unknown company back when they had their servers raided.

4. Nothing at all is happening, or finalized until sometime around this fall, most likely.

5. The Pirate Bay isn't selling out. They were already purchased before. They aren't taking the money and running away. They have A LOT of projects that they want to fund, and this is going to help them do this. The tracker isn't going anywhere.

6. The Pirate Bay isn't being shut down. The Pirate Bay isn't being shut down. The Pirate Bay isn't being shut down.

7. When they say "users will pay for the content" they don't mean you'll pay a subscription. Don't be an idiot.

8. RK-Mara, you have no idea what you're talking about.

This situation is either a great thing, or not even worth mentioning. Decentralization and transparency are the main goals behind this, and if achieved it'll be a great victory for the torrent community.

Regardless, without something like this, The Pirate Bay was not going to sustain itself. As brokep put it, I'd rather the Pirate Bay die trying to become something better than to just die as it was.

I didn't say that what Piratebay is doing is illegal. It just happens to be very shady and in the grey area.

Technically, it's completely legal under Swedish law. Honestly, even logically, it's completely baffling how you could consider it illegal, anywhere.

Politically, however, things are a bit different...

I realize this is a bit off topic, but I was curious about the coming about of scabdates's name.

Did a date go horribly wrong?
