I was surprised that a topic hadn't been started about this. Who's excited for this?

I have the biggest hardon from it. I want a steam box console sooooo bad. It may even put an end to the shitty mainstream games that are rehashed and bland.
When this thing releases, game devs everywhere can create a game and know that it can go right on your console.
Note that this is just the OS currently, not like any specific hardware. However, it technically means you can put it on any custom machine and make your own steam box. _________________ Motherfucking Triangles! Being all three sided n' shit, who do they think they are?!

I was imagining Valve doing something similar to what OPENElec does with XBMC (if it is similar in concept that is). Install SteamOS on an external flash drive and carry around Steam everywhere you go. _________________ Remove the lid of this barrel, for there be Rum inside!

Well seeing as how all Valve games are getting the same item system as tf2 and dota, I wouldn't doubt it.

I really enjoyed the second announcement of the steam boxes. I can foresee in the future there being many different types of consoles at retailers. Some companies making special custom made ones. This is some exciting stuff.
Of course, I went ahead and signed up for the beta and laughed when I saw I'm up against 100k people. Oh well, a guy can dream. _________________ Motherfucking Triangles! Being all three sided n' shit, who do they think they are?!

What do you guys think of the controller? I know it's hard to tell since it's unreleased. _________________ Motherfucking Triangles! Being all three sided n' shit, who do they think they are?!

It can only be useful when playing non console oriented games. Every port will be pretty terrible.
I can only see it being used in some RTS, RPG and FPS games. But I prefer to play those genres on my PC. I look at Nintendo and how they have mastered the use of controller on Gamecube(if you don't have monster hands) I have serious doubts that a software company can do a better job. You don't need to break the working pattern just because you feel like you have to. Valve said that PC gamers don't like gamepads because the controllers are pretty bad for PC games, but I think it's because I have a better controller already to play these PC oriented games, that is keyboard/mouse.
More about Steambox annaranrae...
The amount it takes for companies to make something new to work, like with Wii/u, adding the serious small market on PC(and even smaller for Steamos/box), this will only be used in next year and will be forgotten by everyone else besides Valve and some small indie devs. I would really like Valve to revive the PC gaming and have more studios seeing it as a viable option, but I don't see it happening here.
To penetrate the market, which is being competed not only by Microsoft(which is living room space and gaming), but by others like Samgsung with smart-tvs, Apple with their shit and Sony(...plus tons of others). Valve is really tiny little girl in a fight against steroids monsters. That's the reality. This SteamOS and box is too complicated to understand by normal console buyer(the synergy to stream games), and PC gamers don't see it useful besides second dual-boot OS for gaming. Valve would need shit tons of marketing and money to shell their product everywhere(like MS did with Xbox), make tons of great exclusives for only SteamOS and manage to take millions of losses for years in the process. That will not happen.
Theres no room for SteamOS or the box. They should rather focus on making that HL3 and improve Steam. Theres not a single thing I could see this working, market is already too small if it's being aimed to PC gamers, and too useless and small on games library to matter/make console buyers to buy Steambox instead. And I undestand that Valve doesn't make their own boxes and sell them, but with a market like this it makes it even worse to have smaller manufacturers to make their own, which means they will dump it even faster.
That's my thougts on it. I would like to see Linux to become big, which finnish Linus Tovald set in motion by creating this OS, but here it's not going to happen. Debate me wrong. Rabble Rabble Rabble-

Thanks for your thoughts. I like seeing different angles to the challenges they face and your brought up some great points.
I think the controller is near useless at its present state.
-Four buttons on each side of the screen is weird. It would mean you'd have to move and press action buttons at the same time. But what I do like about it is that it's hackable. Most likely someone will make a better controller.
-I don't really see it being useful at all in any point and click games.
My guess is that this controller will have different inputs. It'd be interesting to see if you can plug any Xbox or PS controller into it's socket.
As for the box and a PC gamer, I would love to get away from the computer. I've wanted to regress back to a console, but by doing so I sacrifice so much. The console world and the PC world are two different realms and you're usually a part of one or the other.
One of my good friends is a console gamer and he never wanted to buy a PC because it's far to expensive. To even play, you need to upgrade every two years and you're looking at thousands of dollars. He only saves his money for a couple hundred dollars at a time but always heard about Steam from me and other gamers. He's envious of the Steam Sales that go on that he doesn't enjoy.
TL;DR - Will they succeed? I honestly don't know. If valve fails, nothing really changes. But if they succeed, they'll merge the gap between the two worlds and pure console gamers will be able to experience the games we've grown to love. _________________ Motherfucking Triangles! If anyone could manage to bridge that gap it'd be Valve, Microsoft is too busy moving closer and closer to tablets and mobiles, Sony doesn't have any innovation and personally i've always thought of Nintendo to be a bit of a wild card since it's to determine what goes on in their heads half the time. We were starting to get stagnant as far as platforms go.
