So, I started doing Project Euler back on January 1st. I was going to try to stay ahead of it for as long as I could manage, seeing as there are 365 problems.... got the flu shortly after and didn't pick it back up though. I've done up through number 11. Should be up to at least 67 now if I'd been keeping up (if you disregard February 29).

A lot of the early problems involve primality tests and factoring and such. I hadn't taken any number theory before now, but I'm studying cryptology this semester and we're covering some things I already covered just learning to solve those problems.

It's pretty fun to do when you're bored -- I've been solving the problems using Ruby, which is basically as close to English as you can get for writing out algorithms. And it's great learning to actually implement some of these things -- I didn't even know what the Sieve of Eratosthenes was until I needed some way to find primes, but now I can actually write code to do it.

I am definitely going to do this at some point - I hope to start within the next year or so. If I do get a PhD in Operations Research it would mean I have to learn number theory, real analysis, complex analysis, etc, so I'm going to be doing a lot of spare-time mathematics in the future. Not ready for these though...

Most of those seem like they need a computer algebra system to solve. There are a couple ones that I've been meaning to learn, so this could be good practice.

Hmm... this is very interesting. However, I'm not as interested in the Math portion.

While although the Math portion is needed for reinforcement, another would be if I were to write Python code to solve the math problems for me.

I would do this as an additional feature to challenge myself and would be more complex than it sounds. Basically, to improve my Python fluency and not so much the Math. Although with these problems, it would certainly help in that department.

I'm bumping this since I'm working on these now as a way of learning Python, and programming in general.

So my experience is basically the opposite of Messy's:

For example, I've known what the sieve of Erastosthenes was for a long time, but I've never implemented it!
