Here is my argument for and against random crits from POV of a medic:

FOR:
It really helps my pocket keep me alive, and its nice when a crit sticky can take out a sentry nest meaning my uber can do more damage in those 8 seconds. Also, when I'm in a desperate situation getting a crit ubersaw or a chain of crit needles has saved me so many times.

AGAINST:
Be warned, this one might be me bitching about egypt more than anything. I hate playing medic O on egypt because it is literally an uphill battle sometimes. Occasionly I'll have to take a few hits in order to get the job done, so I try and stay at >120 health. Crits completely destroy that and it is annoying when I am the only medic, we need an uber to win and some demo/soldier/scout turns the corner fires off one shot and one-shots me and the chance of winning the round. (Yes I'm bad, STFU)

However, I feel that if we were to go the way of no random crits we need to edit more stuff too. It can be done, the reddit TF2 servers pull if off very well and as a result they generally have a higher level of skill. The question is where, do we want this server to go?

I like tf2 just how it is random crits and all.
valve did nothing wrong in creating this beautiful game,
why must we change it?

I basically agree. I don't play much but I don't see the point of changing things. I never get mad when I get killed via a lucky crit. It's just the way it is on a pub server. Plus, I find it helpful in clearing out annoying turret camps when I am a heavy. It's available for everyone so it's not like it makes the gameplay really unfair. I like it how it is as well.

Yeah - leave em alone. I think people who rail to hard against the random crit shouldn't be playing on a pub server and care - tournament, or priv server, is a whole other argument. But we welcome the public and changing things too much will not encourage ppl to come play. Like said above, everyone gets random crits so why is it not fair?

I think too much can be made over a small problem, and in that case it's better to err on the side of not changing it.

Anyone who uses an enforcer shouldn't be allowed to get random crits... tis a silly OP weapon Wink

But in all seriousness I am neutral on the "random" crit debate.

Also, the thing that sparked this discussion was the supposedly increased spawn time, which was only a one-day thing while most server addons were disabled to try to fix the random crashing the server was doing.

Anyway, I agree with the side that says that a public server shouldn't disable them. Random crits are part of the game as intended and the only reason to remove them is if you're running a competition where a bit of randomness can kill 1/6 of your team and make you lose and screw up your record / ladder position / etc. A public server's just to enjoy the game as is.

Besides, random crits aren't just complete extra-damage bolts from the blue -- Valve took care to work them into the game well. Their frequency starts off the same for everyone and increases with damage you deal: http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/File:CritHitChanceGraph.jpg

And some weapons, like the Eyelander, are in part balanced by their lack of random crits. Turning crits off makes that negative attribute meaningless and thus increases those weapons' effectiveness compared to weapons with crits.

....I only want to say no crits because of the fact that everyone seems to crit me in the face on first hit X_X.. But that's just more of a me being upset thing, personally I like the random crits.. Skill is alright.. but luck can be pretty fun every once in a while.

I have been thinking about this:


We are not a super gosu server, nor do we want to be.

Yes, we have damn good players on regularly. However we also have pubs on who enjoy egypt, and hell, they need those crits so that they can have a good time. It's the same reason they use items that cushion them, it lets them have a good time. If we had players like Weed, Goss, and Courier running around with no crits on killing everyone these players would leave.

As much as it sucks to die by a lucky crit, it would suck more not to have these players on here. Every other server that has nocrits enabled either has a giant community behind it such as reddit, or they have like 12 servers and people recognize the name.

We have neither, for the time being keep the crits off. If it bothers you THAT much, find a new server because for the moment I don't think Egypt's random crits should go anywhere.
