Autodesk has the shittiest and most useless site that I've ever been to considering how expensive their products are and how necessary periodic help is for them. I was emailed my serial number for Mudbox in May of 2010, but was never given a product key. It's been so long since I last installed it that I can't remember how I overcame this problem in the first place.

Adobe, an awesome company, has a tab on the front of their site where you can log into your account and review all of your information, including past purchases and their corresponding software keys. Autodesk, on the other hand, has no such log-in on their site. The only one I can ever find is for their customer service, which I wouldn't have to rely upon if the site was built properly. The FAQ claims I can track down my products for re-download if I have the order number. Like a normal person, I don't have my order number a year and a half later and thought that having every single other piece of information (aside from the key mentioned above) for the product itself would suffice to make it run.

I can look up my order number by entering the email I used and the last five digits of my credit card number. This doesn't work. Their next recommendation is as follows:

"If you are unable to find your order using your email address and last 5 digits of your credit card, please look up your order using your order number and password."

Oh, I see. To look up the order number on my order form, I need to enter my order number. If I had that, I wouldn't be here. There's a tab for people who ordered their products prior to this past July, which would include me. I click on the link and it brings me to the same form.

I'm now relying entirely on their customer service department's email to solve this problem for me. I can now understand why people pirate their software so mercilessly. Ironically, it's easier to get it to work when it's stolen.

I hear that. Although Adobe sux in their own ways Wink The Autodesk support site does suck and belongs in the trash all the vendors "support" sites that don't have your particular model of whatever it is you need help on. I sometimes believe that I am the only person in the world who must have bought model # J2X45ZZtop but it's missing from their list of 42,500 other models including J2X44ZZtop AND J2X46ZZtop

Update: I got it to work. From what i figured out from their email, I deduced I was using the installer for 2010 instead of 2011. That's my stupid mistake, but the funny thing is that this could have been one of those quick 'smack on the head' moments of incompetence for me instead of a 90 minute ordeal had I been able to look anything up on their website that would have been remotely useful. Now that I see that their safety net for my products consists of a flaming pile of scrap metal and broken glass, I'm tempted to burn all of my info onto discs in triplicate and store one in a safe deposit box.
