R.E.M. made up of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bass player Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry, have released 15 albums since forming in 1980.
The band said they had decided to "call it a day" in a posting on the group's official website.
"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the statement said.
"We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished.
"To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

I suppose they came to this conclusion after they stood in the place where they worked, thought about their direction, wondered why they had it.

i gotta admit EARLY REM influenced me greatly not much of a fan after adventures in hi fi in fact one of the best shows i ever watch live and on a defunct show called unplugged on MTV right after the out of time album....and i know the lyrics for end of the world as we know it by heart
i seen this band in atlanta on the dreaded 95 tour when all 3 members ended up having surgery for various issues including an aneurysm after that i thought the only way they would split is if one of them died

I got Soundgarden back. The way I see it, this is the universe coming into balance. I'm not a huge REM fan, but I own their older stuff. I still love the song Stand, obviously, since it reminds me of the early 90s. It was my favorite song at the age of 11. They were basically the poster boys for Alt Rock, so this is proof that the era is truly gone.

I sometimes worry about rock music in the post-Napster age. Grunge died in '96 and was replaced by Nu Metal. That's been going on since and the next big thing has yet to come down the pipe. Fifteen years is a long time for music to stay in one mode. Rock has actually never had a phase that stayed 'mainstream' for this long. This is mostly just me ranting about stagnation in music, but I needed to get it out of my system and see if anyone else agreed.
