This is pretty much the first movie of the summer season. I went and saw it over the weekend and here's what I think.

A millenium ago, war raged between the realm of Asgard and the Frost Giants of Jotunheim. After a brutal conflict, Odin and Asgard claimed victory over the Frost Giants and relieved them of their source of power to prevent further bloodshed. Since then, there has been a truce and, while hostile toward Asgard, the Giants have been no real threat.

Thor is the mightiest of Asgard's warriors, but arrogant and brash. He violates the conditions of the truce and threatens peace in both realms. As punishment for his selfish lust for battle and in an effort to teach him humility, his father, Odin, strips him of his power and banishes him to Earth. It's there that he endures the trials that will reward him with redemption.

If I were to give this film a letter grade, it would be a B. While it won't be as immediately endearing as Iron Man was, it does have its moments. The thing about this film that I liked most, aside from amazing set pieces and costume design, was the humor. While Iron Man used a bit more adult humor for many of its jokes, Thor's is completely innocent physical comedy most of the time. It definitely qualifies as a crowd-pleaser for this reason. The action violence is really the only thing that qualifies it as a PG-13 film. Another thing that can be enjoyed on another level are the small references to other Marvel comics. True comic geeks will get little references to other comics in the film, most of which are aimed at fellow Avengers, but you'll even catch one for Moon Knight if you're really listening. Now that's obscure. Make sure you see it in 3D. This film's environments are amazing just to look at and fully utilize the technology. By the way, stay through the credits. You should know to do that with these Marvel movies by now. There will be something else to see at the end.

I'll probably get around to seeing it after finals are over so at least there is something to look forward to relieve the stress.
