The Fighter

I went to a nice quiet 7:30 showing tonight and mildly liked it. For those of you not familiar with it, I'll give you the brief synopsis.

It's based on the true story about a Lowell, MA man named Micky Ward and his former pro-boxer brother, Dicky. Dicky was at one point a contender, having gone so far as to win a fight against Sugar Ray Leonard in a freak upset, but wasted his career on drugs and fell apart. Micky has never been much more than a 'stepping stone', that is, a fighter whose sole purpose is to give easier wins to climbers. Over the course of the film, both hit rock bottom and begin to seek a better purpose in their lives, the younger brother competing for the chance that his brother wasted and the older one fighting his own battle with addiction.

The film is overall pretty enjoyable, but not tremendously original or nearly as endearing as other underdog boxer flicks like Rocky or Cinderella Man. That having been said, there is still a good reason to see this film and that is Christian Bale. Expect some supporting actor award nominations for him next season.

Being of a more art house nature, it won't be as crowd pleasing (or efficient with its time) as would be necessary for higher than two and a half or three stars.
