I went to a midnight showing at the Mall of America and this is what I got out of it.

Iron Man 2 opens up immediately after the ending to the first film. Tony Stark is riding high on a wave of public approval. As Winston Churchill once pointed out, if you stand up for something, you will have enemies and Stark has them crawling out of the woodwork. Everyone from politicians to another mechanical fiend wants a piece of him.

The film was criticized by one critic for not having a larger plot than it did, but the interesting thing about the storyline is that it focuses on the fate of the Iron Man persona and what purpose it'll serve in the free world. That's not unlike the dilemmas that Stark faces in the comic series, so it's completely appropriate. With the introduction of so many new faces in this movie, adding in more plot would really have dragged it on far longer than would have been wise. The pacing of this movie is exactly what makes it succeed where the last one faltered. The delicate balance of character development and action seems to have been pulled off well. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this film is how effective the villain is this time around. It's another high tech baddie, but it doesn't feel obligatory like last time. The climactic battle at the end doesn't last a minute longer than it must which preserves the immersion, which was my biggest issue with the original.

This is the first time since Spider-Man 2 that I've seen a decent comic book movie sequel. Not only that, but this is probably the best overall sequel to anything I've seen since then as well. That's saying alot, but IM2 is worth the full price of admission. I'll be seeing it twice.

The CG for the suit also is greatly improved, though that's no surprise. The integration of the faces within the suits is still not really good but much better than the last film where the faces seemed plastered on.
