Figured someone on here might know the answer to this. I cannot get anything to connect to the internet on my laptop other than internet explorer. My instant messangers, Quicken, GPS updaters etc. will not connect. I've tried turning off the firewall and disabling virus protectors but still no luck. Any suggestion? I'm guessing it has something to do w/ a setting somewhere seeing that the programs and applications are all unrelated to each other. Even my GMAIL notifier won't work.

Sounds like you have a firewall and you have only allowed IE to run. Check under program permission if you do have a FW.

Usually everything works BUT Internet Explorer when problems arise - lol,

I finally figured it out. Wasn't firewall or anything like that. Somehow the "use proxy" box was checked under the LAN settings. Why it was checked I have no idea because it never has on this computer and it's not on a LAN. Someone said sometimes Vista auto-tune will just change crap.

Interesting. Everything except IE was trying to use proxy settings. hmm... Did this happen the day after Europe dropped its monopoly case against Microsoft? Razz

So, in summary -- IE failed to follow instructions. It should've tried to use a proxy too.

Even when it's the only thing working, it's really the only thing not working.
