Due to some sweet warranty deal with Best Buy my old 19" flatscreen has been replaced with this monstrosity of a Sony Bravia 26" lcd.

My issue though is that the highest resolution I can manage is 1360 x 768. The (now updated) visual control panel for my gfx card says it is supposed to do somewhere in the range of 1600 x 1200 for 20+ inch screens. Is there some new cable I have to buy?

gfx card: Radeon 4800 series HD

Is it a widescreen monitor? 1600x1200 is a 4:3 ratio, which is non-widescreen.

It is, yeah. I'm not sure what the widescreen res is, but I'm sure the PC + tv can handle more then what its currently doing.

I have a big ass monitor with the regular old pin connector cable hooked up and running at 1920x1200. I didn't even use the DVI connection so I dont think you need a cable.

Not sure but it might be a limit on your graphics card???

The monitor will have a cap too but I suspect it is way higher than what you stated for that size.

It says my maximum resolution is 1920 x 1200, but under display settings only goes 1360 x 768 max. I haven't found anything online saying the 4800 series cant do bigger.

It looks like you have a Sony Bravia S-Series HDTV (not monitor).

It does use a different cable. It does have a 16:9 HD Resolution Panel (1366x768). This is the bottleneck on your resolution.

I think you need to take it back and tell them you need a monitor. :/ That resolution at 2 foot viewing will suck. Not sure if it will work even. Dont know much about tvs except it looks like a differentcable required. Razz

Dont know shit about tvs, and am guessing that's what it is based on your posts and max res. I would investigate this possibility though.

Ah ok - that's what I was afraid of. I don't have one of those HD cables - that might solve the whole thing.

I may end up going back to my smaller actual monitor, who knows. Thanks for the help brudio Smile

As I already explained, you need a PC to HDMI cable. They're expensive, but at least you can get one at your local Wal-Mart. Also, fortunately, I hear that ATI cards have built in settings to fit it to the size of your TV screen. My Nvidia card has an area about the size of a desktop icon on all sides that doesn't fit on the screen.

yw Anony.

Cant fix the res though - and that would be the REAL issue even with the right cable. Id say use a dedicated monitor...

Haha you were right... with my new shiny (expensive) cable, it lets me go up to all those resolutions, but looks like shit on the tv. I'm a little smarter now, but 50 bucks poorer Razz

I hope there are any advantages to using a AVI to HDMI.

Mine is coiled up behind the TV for the same reasons. Maybe someday I'll get it to look right, but for now, I won't be using my TV for a monitor. I guess $40-50 MSRP is the price we pay for our vanity and lust for gigantic electronic entertainment. Nuts.

The 720p resolution is shit when browsing the internet or doing any kind of office work. Other than that, it's pretty handy. I don't really care what the resolution is, as long as it's the native resolution of the screen and with such a low native resolution, your PC will be able to churn out some massive frame rates.

I've actually grown accustomed to the 1360 x 768, it feels like one of those giant mac screens. Although I do get a creepy feeling that the computer watches me now, instead of me, it.
