My wireless connectivity lately has gone to complete crap. It continuously cuts in and out even if I'm w/in 5 feet of the router. The router itself is fine because I have the Xbox plugged directly into it and have no connection issues.

From my apartment, there are currently 11 other wireless signals that my computer is detecting w/in range of me. Could all these other wireless networks be the cause of the crappy connection? And if so, is there any way to rectify it? I have the strongest connection to mine when it's running.

Well, what kind of router is it? I know my Belkin has an option under the Channel and SSID tab, "Protected Mode" that you should use when there's a lot of 802.11 traffic around, like what you apparently have.

Check what channel your wireless is, and check what other people are using if you can. Most people use channel 6 or channel 11 by default, IIRC, so switch it to something else and see if it improves?

Can you give us more details about your router?
About what kind of wireless gear you have?
What type of wireless it is?

Also, what kind of encryption are you using, if any?

Just as a side note, wireless has always sucked for me.

Wang's proly right, I bet everyone else is on the same channel. If you change it, you need to change it on the client adapter as well.

Also, what I think Wang was alluding to about security - if you have no security enabled, someone is for sure using your connection (that would also account for sloooow ass speed). Use WPA2 if possible, or WPA, don't use WEP unless that's your only option - it can be hacked by a noob in <10 min.

It's a Linksys Wireless G, 2.4 ghtz. I'm using the encryption (I think the 128 but I'm not for certain). I'll have to go into the control panel for the router and see if I can change the channel. No clue what channels the other folks are using so I'm sure they are on default.

We use the same kind of router at my house. A few years ago connection speed randomly went into the toilet one day, and if you disconnected from the network you couldn't reconnect. My dad figured out the problem when he noticed that the router smelled like it was burning -- turns out it somehow fried itself. Had to replace it.

That is the exact same router I used to have. Piece of trash.

Solution:
1. unplug router
2. throw router in trash
3. buy new router

I'm seriously considering following that advice.
