What do you guys know about models for the source engine? My goal here is to take the model of the weighted companion cube from the portal files and convert it (from .smd I guess) and convert it to a 2x2x2" .stl to print on a rapid prototyper (if I can sneak in to use it). Any of you guys have a guess on how to do it?

Use GCF Scape to extract and open the Portal .gcf in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps

in portal\models\props there are a bunch of metal_box files in gcfscape. Am I looking for the .mdl, the .vvd, or one of the .vtx's? Once I find the right file, how do I get it into a .stl, or a the least something that I can open with AutoCAD 2007 and then export to .stl?

Source models dont work with Maya... ever. in any way. they hate each other. I swear...

Something about SMD and Maya. New Maya supposedly works, if you want to figure out all the intricacies of a crap-ass official Valve-forum. It would take the guy 5 minutes to pull the shit that works from random people's posting regarding their personal success. But no...

.FBX file will work between Maya and Max if you have latest versions of both. Then 3DS to SMD still works fine. Still, fuck Valve lamers, they admit using Maya for their own production but cant share the instructions/coding required to make their official plug-in work. Rolling Eyes
