i have been thinking about servers for the last few days......when i bought my new CPU, i started to look at what ells had changed in the tech world since i had last visited. any way....i am thinking in a year or 2 i will build a new comp (needless to say).......but i have been thinking of possible uses for the one i have now when the time comes.....

i was thinking i could either sell it to friends (although slow for the time i sell it, it should still be rock solid) or should i hold onto it for other purposes.......

if a T1 line in Co would be fast enough to use as a playable CT server for our own personal use.........what would the minimum hardware specs be for battle field 1942 (and pirates and forgotten hope and 1918) at a max of 32 players??? and could it also run BF2 and BF2P at 16 players as a server decently well. the only thing i can really say is that it will be slow to load. as i am not getting anything faster than 7,200 RPM for it (taking my present hard drives with me to my next comp) this will not be a dedicated game server.

any way, just want your input on the situation, and ideas.

and as my current crappy internet is going to shit on me, it may be a wile before i am able to upload this post lol........

If it's just going to be sitting around, give linux a shot. You can get a version that's less intensive than windows to run, and then get a server going on it. You probably wouldn't be able to do too much with it, but even if you hook it up to a good cable connection, it should be able to run 16 players easily.

T1 lines have a good amount of upload bandwidth, but depending on the peering/routing, the pings will vary. If you are running BF42, I wouldn't be too concerned with hardware, even if its 2-3 years old. I wouldn't run a server off of a T1 line, a better route is to see if you can strike a deal with a data center or something along that line.

If you do decide that you want to go for the dedicated route, make sure you do it right and host at least a few game servers (depending on the games, of course.)

this will NOT be a dedicated server. in fact, it will only be on when we want to test something, or just have some fun among CTs.

EDIT: also, the computer is not 2-3 years old, its 3-4. and by the time i start setting it up, it will be 4-5 most likely.

as for going with professional server bank, the whole idea of this was to have a use for my computer. also, i will not have to spend any extra money. both things that will not be so if i go that rout.

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but I thought you might still look at it.

I run a computer that was purchased in the year 2000 with only a gigahertz processor and 512MB of RAM as an internal dedicated to play with my roommates. It really doesn't have trouble keeping up with the BF42 server at all. I'm sure your newer hardware will be ok.
