"So far six confirmed dead and the helicopters are pulling into (Lancaster General Hospital) like crazy," Lancaster County Coroner G. Gary Kirchner said.

The shooter was among the dead, state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said. He was identified as Charles Roberts, a 32-year-old milk delivery driver who lived nearby.

Three girls, all critical with gunshot wounds and ages 6 through 12, were admitted to Lancaster General Hospital, spokesman John Lines told NBC affiliate WGAL-TV.

Police said Roberts had entered the school, sent the male students outside and kept the girls in while blocking the doors.

WGAL-TV also reported that the shooter had entered the school in rural Lancaster County and started making threats.

Some people in the Amish community learned about the situation and contacted police, WGAL reported. Negotiations apparently then took place but at some point at least 10 shots were fired within the school, WGAL said. It appeared the shooter took his own life.

Two hours later, about three dozen people in traditional Amish clothing, hats and bonnets stood near the small school building speaking to one another, several young people and authorities.

At least two ambulances had left the scene, and at least one person was taken on a stretcher to a medical helicopter.

Twenty-seven students are said to have attended the private school, which teaches first through eighth grades.

The school is situated among farmlands just outside Nickel Mines, a tiny village about 55 miles west of Philadelphia.

Officials at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center confirmed that victims were being admitted there. A spokeswoman said the hospital anticipated more than one patient, but did not know how many.

Other recent incidents
The shooting followed reports earlier on Monday of lockdowns at two schools in the Las Vegas area.

Police and trained dogs had deployed around Mojave High and Elizondo Elementary schools in North Las Vegas, Nevada, and police were looking for an armed youth, KLAS-TV reported.

Monday�s violence followed two gun-related incidents that shook U.S. schools last week.

On Friday, a 15-year-old student fatally wounded his school�s principal in western Wisconsin. A drifter in Colorado Wednesday took six female high school students hostage, molested them and then shot one to death and killed himself as police closed in.

No the gun control people don't have a point. Those assholes would have done heinous things even if laws prohibited or further restricted guns. Remeber folks only the law abiding citizens follow laws and regulations, CRIMINALS break those laws. Hell if you are going to kill people, why do you care if their are laws keeping you from guns, you will break those laws too seeing as they aren't as bad as the murder you are about to commit.

People kill people, take the guns and people will still die, from illegally obtained guns, knives, and other household objects. People still get killed in England and they don't have guns. It is one thing to make it so that kids cannot have access to guns of their parents, etc, totally another to do what anti-gun crazies want.

Remember many of those anti-gun people tend to also be conspiracy theorists/goverment haters. Well get rid of guns and maybe all their theories come true if we get some kind of martial law and cannot stop the gov't from doing shit. The right to bear arms is for our protection, not our destruction.

Instead of focusing on gun laws, they should instead try and make schools safer and develope programs to catch these fools before they act.

And to let yall know, where I went to high school we have had 0 violence with bomb threats or guns, and some kids actually had guns under seats of their trucks. Worst that happened was beatings with fists. I carried a knife with me most of the time even, and still do on my college campus(it aint no small one either). If people think they cannot succeed they will not try, we are talking about the dregs of human society committing these crimes after all, not ambitious overachievers. This is why you don't see gunmen shooting up schools in areas of high legal gun ownership concentration, where there is a chance that they might get taken out before they can cause enough damage.

School security needs to be tightened. Not getting rid of the guns. My dad used to live in the ghetto and his house was broken into every other night basically. If he didn't have a gun, then he could have been killed. :/

I just think it is terrible that things like this happen. There's really not much you can do to stop a maniac who's last goal in life is to rape some high school girls and shoot them and himself. I mean it's depressing, but that shit is pretty much unavoidable.

people have been killing each other since the beginning of time. all guns do is make it easier.

it is a real shame that this shit happens, but what makes me even more pissed off about it is when they blame guns and video games for what happened...... BAH!!!

tightening school security will not do it either. people will always find a way to get shit in. what really needs to be done is for people to pay the fuck attention to what is going on and you will start to pick out who might be the type to do something like this. (there is some one that i went to high school with back in the day that i always thought was crazy in a not good way (more sadistic crazy instead of just crazy gun loving explosives making nut like me) any way, i recently found out that he killed a few people that he dint get along with back when he was in school........broke into there apartment and shot all 3 of them in the head with a 12 gage.....then was shot down by cops in the next county will trying to take out some more.....

dint really get on the news much because of something ells that happened about the same time. dont really remember what it was though, however it was a wile ago.

If you un invent guns, shit like this will still happen��.only with shit like cross bows shit like that��

Ya some girl lost her head to a 12 gauge this past week in my hometown. And in a town of 4,500 that is huge, we haven't had a murder in maybe 10 years. She was at her sister's boyfriend's house, and he happens to be a major player in drug sales, only thing known after that is that she was found minus most of a head in his house.

They say accidental, but highly unlikely.
