Alrighteh-
I recently tried installing mepis linux on one of the partitions on my primary hard drive to get some files I had backed up for my aunt and the installation failed at the point where it was going to install a program called GRUB- a bootloader that allows me to choose which OS I want to boot. I figured I would restart the computer and that would be fixed.
So I reboot it, try the install again and it doesnt work. I figured I would mess with it some other time so I too out the mepis CD and tried booting to windows. Nothing. My computer gets past the bios screen and stops.
So, I try a couple different things. I format the partition that I had tried installing linux on and when I try to boot, it does the same thing. I try taking that hard drive out, putting in another hard drive, installing XP on it it and when it gets to the point in the installation where it asks you to take out the CD and restart it does the same thing.
I would say what I think it is, but in all honesty, I have no fucking clue. A new hard drive should have fixed it, but it didn't. Bad mobo perhaps? Bad IDE cable? It boots to a CD just fine, but refused to work when I try to boot to a hard drive.

something in the bios change? I'm assuming it's not an SATA drive since you said "bad IDE cable?" - so check BIOS to see if you've enabled SATA to take up one of the IDE channels - if so disable SATA. If that doesn't work, see if you have a "SAFE" bios setting you can reset to.
post back here on your progress _________________

can you boot from a bootable CD?
If yes, what are your drives jumpered to? They should be set to CSEL
or Cable Select. If not, try jumpering the hard drive like the CD drive is and vice versa. I've had hard disks suddenly not able to be the master device on the IDE channel, and I've switched the master function from hard drive to CD drive and the hard drive can boot again. try it - don't just say, ya - didn't work - explain what you tried step by step so i'll believe you actually tried the suggestion, otherwise it's hard to try to help people out _________________

5-10 secs just like the manual said.
And the system will boot from the CD but won't not the hard drives. I have 4 devices set up on 2 IDE cables. They are all set up as master/slave on their respictive cable. All the devices show up in the bios, the system just won't boot to the hard drive.
Spoke with level 1 asus tech support and they told me to try unplugging all the devices except the hard drive and set that up so it knows it is the only one on the cable and that didnt work. It was closing time for them, so I left a message with level 2 tech support and am awaiting a response. _________________ You do not say that the wheel is fatigued, yet the body is as material as the wheel
